A warm and down-to-earth team that makes it a great place to work.
The good thingsI’ve been working at Mercy for nearly five years and have experience across a number of aged care settings. It’s been one of my favourite places to work. There’s a really warm, friendly and down-to-earth atmosphere across the team. Management are approachable and give you a good level of trust and autonomy. It’s a privilege to work with the residents, and I’ve been able to build strong relationships with staff over time. Overall, it’s been a really rewarding place to be, and I’ve genuinely appreciated my time here.
The challengesAs with many aged care settings, there are ongoing changes across the sector, which can naturally present challenges for management to navigate

Toxic workplace that was never addressed by management.
The good thingsClients and support workers and also the job itself
The challengesToxic office working environment with no management back up. Work colleagues make out it’s a great place to work when management are in the office, as soon as there is none everything changes. When addressed personally made out to look like the bad guy and then made to feel isolated. Constantly doing over time to manage workload with no recognition. Work load unmanageable with no offer to assist. Support worker ratio to client was ridiculous and workers were starting to burn out with no back up.

I’m glad I left the place , I finally have my mental health back
The good thingsI got paid regularly
The challengesThe ongoing issues with this place is numerous. The prevailing attitude by managerial staff is dictatorial and is not fair by any means . Simple things like getting tea breaks is not a given, rostering is a shambles and OVA is given no respect, and staff are left to work things out with little to no support.

    Hostile management and extreme hierarchies
The good thingsThe office is modern and generally a nice environment to work in. Some of the people are nice.
The challengesAwful management. Extremely hierarchical with managers willing to offload all work to those lower down the pecking order and blame them . There is very little support in place to help with progression. A big tick and flick attitude towards diversity and inclusion as they don't really put money into it.

The good thingsThe residents were good, unfortunately nothing else
The challengesPoor care, poor hygiene, poor treatment and practices, most staff do not speak English and very hard for residents to communicate, poor food choice, poor centred care and holistic approach. Staff rude, and most incapable of caring no empathy

Please consider staff who are already working in the company at other locations such as aged care homes, when positions open up. We have seen a trend of only head office workers getting opportunities, and positions gets filled with no advertising within the company, when there are more qualified and staff with hands on experience in the sector are not offered opportunities to climb up the ladder. Provide a fair and a transparent process , provide other employees with an opportunity to apply for promotions and positions with higher responsibilities.
The good thingsResidents, fellow workers , salary packaging, fair salary in aged care
The challengesPromotions within the company seems only reserved for head office employees when there are many qualified and experienced, deserving workers working at aged care facilities , they recruit people with less or no experience in aged care who gets promoted to national/ regional management in short time

Expect gaslighting from management because they all have their own agendas. Everyone taking leave to survive. Each day you come to work wondering who is going to turn up.
The good thingsA good place to get experience as an entry-level in a challenging environment. There are a few good people in there, trying to make a difference.
The challengesManagement, high staff turnover, no resourcing, burnt-out staff or no one turning up to work at all.

My clients are wonderful. Management are a disappointment.
The good thingsWonderful clients. Each day is a pleasure to get up and go to work.
The challengesManagement appear to not want to have anything to do with clients or home care workers, unless via email. This method of communication makes clients and carers feel unvalued and disrespected.
