Strong leadership, thriving workplace culture, dedicated teams.
The good thingsThe Program Manager for Gippsland was second to none. Strong leadership and a wonderful human being. Incredibly supportive, encouraging, accommodating and ensured flexibile family-friendly working arrangements where possible. I always felt valued as an employee, acknowledged for the work I put in, and celebrated. I was fortunate to have access to an array of professional development opportunities which enhanced my skills. The Gippsland team was a strong. Highly professonal, skilled, and dedicated to supporting parents in overcoming vocational and non-vocational barriers to study and employment. One particular colleague had such a positive impact on my life both professionally and personally, and I am forever grateful for crossing paths. A healthy workplace culture built on care, diversity and inclusiveness, empathy, kindness, and celebration.
The challengesDelivering a mandated program was challenging, yet rewarding.

Unethical and not a good use of Government funding. Incompetent Leadership with no direction.
The good thingsSome work colleagues are supportive and good to work with.
The challengesMicromanagement from team above, no sense of direction or leadership established for team to implement action towards tasks. Inapplicable services provided for areas that were not beneficial for consumers nor the community.

    Micromanagement at its finest
The good thingsGreat program and team, people who genuinely care and want to see young people achieve positive outcomes.
The challengesManagement - unfortunately one of the worst I have experienced. Undermines staff in front of others, micromanages, and is incredibly controlling. Management has limited experience outside the organization. They promote flexibility, though this is not the case - asking for flexibility is often made uncomfortable and difficult, with the feeling there is no trust or support for staff with real-life commitments. Overall the experience created a work environment that felt stressful and demotivating. High staff turnover due to these issues.

    Horrible experience.
The good thingsI can point to anything as premium is not placed on staff safety.
The challengesMicromanagement is their specialist. Favouritism is highly prevalent with no career progression, but stagnation.

A meaningful place to work, driven by purpose.
The good thingsMission Australia has a strong sense of purpose, and the work genuinely contributes to social impact. Colleagues are passionate and supportive, and there’s a real commitment to helping vulnerable communities. Flexible work arrangements and an increasing focus on wellbeing are definite positives.
The challengesLike many non-profits, there can be slow decision-making, outdated systems, and occasional communication breakdowns between departments. Some processes could use more consistency and transparency, especially when it comes to internal collaboration.

Valued the intent of the role, but the system wasn’t ready to hold what it asked for.
The good thingsAt Mission Australia, I valued stepping into a culturally grounded role that centred Indigenous leadership and care. I was able to advocate for more responsive practice and support clients through a relational, trauma-informed lens.
The challengesThe role revealed systemic limits — cultural work was welcomed in name, but not always in practice. Navigating institutional expectations while upholding integrity proved unsustainable in a structure not ready to hold the depth required.

pretty great job and wonderful team but volatile job space. not always guaranteed work every year.
The good thingsthe Team and the management were really positive to work with and had made some pretty good connections whilst working at mission.
The challengesthe job at FLO is very volatile. we had multiple schools drop mission Australia enforcing people to be let go. not a great job if you require consistency and have a family to look after.

Wouldn't work here, not appreciated, manager takes credit for all hard work, you get micromanaged, employees keep leaving, huge red flags. Disappointed to say the least.
The good thingsSalary, work colleagues, diversity in clientelle
The challengesManagement don't manage aligning to Mission Australia's values towards employees, if you manage up and tick boxes your in the click. No growth opportunities. Micromanaging staff and no compassion or emotional support when "life" occurs.

Worked there for too many years … should have bailed out before it started to go downhill. It was a great service with great outcomes for young people.
The good thingsThe idea of assisting young people to make change for a meaningful life is there…. But
The challengesThe service I worked for has changed and is going backwards from an award winning AOD service to a tick box refuge type service…. Too many new managers and workers who have no experience and no idea

Unfortunately I was chosen for a role in which I believe I was not the desired candidate from the onset.
The good thingsWorking in an environment that assists vulnerable people in the community is a great thing to be part of. Staff members are friendly and kind.
The challengesIn hindsight the recruitment process was inadequate for position. Onboarding experience was slow and difficult to navigate when expectations to perform from the get go were exceedingly high. Complex working environment without sufficient employee support by management and/or staff numbers to manage and achieve desired outcomes. Miscommunication by management.
