Too high of expectations for too low of pay.
The good thingsTaking the photos for the kids
The challengesFor the largest school photography company you'd expect it to be run better. Lower than advertised pay. Only told details of your shift at 6-7pm the night before. 6am/6:30am starts in places possibly 2 hours away. Your 'breaks' will include snacking between kids coming through, and double checking photos. Rosters (and locations) can change at a moments notice.

Unfortunately was let go due to the financial impact of COVID, but still enjoyed my time there
The good thingsThe work I did was pretty easy, essentially was just checking all the school photo printouts to make sure there were no printing errors, and packing orders that were ready to go into a box for dispatch. Other colleagues were all really nice. There was no real uniform either, you could pretty much wear whatever you wanted, so long as you didn't have any offensive logos or slogans on your clothes.
The challengesTrying to do the job while adhering to the very loose guidelines that were around at the start of the COVID pandemic was pretty challenging, due to the contact you had with a lot of people and shared objects. The work could get a little bit monotonous at times. Didn't really have many other bad experiences, due to how short my stint here was.

Worked like a dog for pennysWorked for msp for over 3 months. Over this time hours and responsibilities escalated to a point of over 62 hours a week with little to no human interactions. Our section despite having the lowest payrate and longest hours was not afforded any of the conviences the other staff were allowed.

Lucky I had good work colleagues, otherwise would have left a lot sooner.
The good thingsDifferent locations means different places & faces every day
The challengesManagement. Horrible, absolutely horrible. They want to micro manage and treat you like you’re beneath them, and that they’re in control of everything. Was barely paid minimum wage.

The team part is good - management has been a challenge at times - good job as a stepping stone
The good thingsThe team i joined with were awesome and the regulars were awesome. paid travel office work available when field work isnt
The challengesFirst two school terms are full of work but second half you're better off finding something else due to lack of work constant battle against others for work (down to who produces the best work) sometimes have to travel is quite the distance but is normally taken but people who live furthest or have been there longest- Talking respectively to kids who aren't respectable to you explaining to primary school students what you want them to do whilst keeping cool

It was a fun ride for all of 5 minutes
The good thingsThe working environment is great. Everything 'on the field' is fun, light-hearted and energetic.
The challengesTransparency, sustainability, zero security. I was not made aware of the 'big cull' that takes place after the first couple months. They spoke in training like we'd be there all year but please do not be fooled like I was. Watch the end of Avengers: Infinity War for an accurate depiction of the team at the end of term 1.

One of the best places I have ever worked. MSP provides training and experience that is well regarded in the industry, and employs and pays on experience. MSP employees people from diverse backgrounds.
The good thingsGreat work environment, great people to work with. Provides all the training required to do the job well. Pays above award wages. Other generous entitlements such as a bonus program, BBQ lunches and morning teas, employee of the month, 6 weeks off over Christmas. You get out what you put in.
The challengesDuring peak which lasts about 3 months, there are long days of work to keep up with the workload, but this evens out over the year.

I truely had a blast with MSP Central Queensland. They kinda become a second family, with the highs and lows of it all but you pull through.
The good thingsIt's a great an environment to build a strong foundation in photography. The people. I was working for the Central Queensland MSP franchise, and you do a lot of travelling. Meaning you a lot of the after hours time is spent with the team and getting to know them a lot better than normally would.
The challengesThe travel is what I found to be the hardest in the Central Queensland region. simply because of how much travel is involed. Everything it paid for; time of tavel, motels, etc. It just takes its toll after a while. If casual you tend to be working for about 6 months of the school year, making it so you need a christmas job to get you through the over 6 months

    Nightmarish
The good thingsCo workers were lovely and very hardworking - I don't remember someone there that was slack.
The challengesYou were expected to work so much without little recognition; the franchisees were nightmarish to deal with, and often petty in their interactions with you even though you were working for them; and upper management was ridiculous and expected you to take on the roles of two to three people for minimal wage.

    Management lack empathy
The good thingsgood opportunity to learn more about the photography industry and professional studio lighting
The challengesthe management is awful. Very very limited training provided and high turnover of staff. Expect the world from you but do not provide a supportive, enjoyable environment.

The friendly staff was always willing to share the knowledge with you, really good teamwork and flexible times.
The good thingsExcellent work environment, it's an open doors company what means there are no barriers between the staff and managers, you can talk and express your concerns and they will be more than happy in listening and help as far as possible.
The challengesThe long hours during peak season, however, at the end of the year you found your reward with very long holidays.

The best fun while I developed my skills as a photographer, almost better than any qualification that you can get.
The good thingsThe team environment is great. Early starts and finishing mid afternoon is great.
The challengesNo work during school holidays. needing to find photography work during Christmas holidays, but the team will help you with their contacts and fantastic references.

Great job if you want something temporary.
The good thingsGreat staff, easy work, great experience
The challengesVery high staff turnover, so no job security. Management pays men more than women. Desires long term staff, but treats them poorly.

One of the better, retail photography jobs.
The good thingsGood crew of people at the Bundoora branch. Get through your first season and you'll keep going back. Management are reasonable, logical and fair.
The challengesCan be hot, physical and tiring work. Early starts and hot school halls. Teenagers can make you want to walk out the door. But mostly finish by lunch and no editing so free all afternoon so it is worth it.

If you want to test how much you love photography then work for MSP because there's a lot of people that never touch a camera again after they work here.
The good thingsWorking in the industry was great
The challengesUnrealistic work hours (sometimes 4 am start time with minimal breaks and often didn't get back until after hours) Management expected our lives to revolve around this job and it was really unhealthy.

Enjoyed the job side of things, just not the stress that that went along with it.
The good thingsCasual staff were really good to work with. and office staff were very friendly and easy to get along with
The challengesLong days, terrible pay for the amount of hours that are expected. No overtime, no acknowledgment for the amount of work that is put in. Constant negativity towards staff, even when they are doing the right thing. Was constantly belittled and treated poorly by management. Would be told to do something a particular way one day, only to be told the next day that I was doing it wrong! Allegations of mistakes with no investigation or anything to be able to back it up.

Only consider for (very) temporary work and experience.
The good thingsIt provides a jump off point for developing confidence with directing clients, positioning and basic photography and lighting skills.
The challengesManagement were misleading during interviews regarding how many hours you may work - it's less than what they say. There's a lot of travel and often the distance doesn't validate the hours (they don't bother assigning you to jobs that are close to you). Basically you put in more than you get back and management aren't grateful and would often boast about cutting people back. They do a big hire at the beginning of the year for the first school term then do a cull - there won't be much work after that for those that remain. Training is average and you are constantly being fed contradictory information from management. Constant negative feedback and generally a negative work environment.

Payed the bills, but wouldn't work there again.
The good thingsGood people. Made some great friendships in my time there.
The challengesPay is not great. Work life balance was okay but had declined. Most employees in resource centre are on Flex time contracts but don't have much flexability.

Okay for the resume but not worth the stress.
The good thingsPay is alright, work can be quite steady during the first half of the year. Skills that look good on a resume.
The challengesUnorganised management that makes employees often feel undervalued. very little potential for progression, no additional incentives to return each year. Have to use own vehicles with no fuel allowance or reimbursement.
