A time of my working life I will always remember fondly, but mainly because of the people I worked with. The good things1. 24/7 shift work is not for everyone, but it does have it's advantages - rarely having to drive through rush hour; days off when 9-5'ers are at work.
2. Rode push bike to work regularly, showering facilities present, and lockers available.
3. Big car parking subsidies.
4. Wardrobe supplying uniforms, and exec dry cleaning allowance build into salary packages.
5. Employee restaurant - 1 main, 2 entrees per shift, part of employment agreement.
6. Working in the city centre is great.
7. Definitely not the least important \"good thing\" - such a diverse workforce, so many great connections established, and friendships formed. It's like its own world.
8. I never felt my personal safety was threatened working at the casino, everyone looks after one another.
The challenges1. Gamblers are definitely a unique breed of people. Most are just like your auntie, brother, or neighbour. Great conversations happen. But there are patrons who can be very challenging and demanding, because they invest a very large proportion of their income into the business, and ultimately you never win with gambling, especially if you do it regularly.
2. Being a public company, the casino, or more so SKYCITY, are forever trying to keep the shareholders and board members happy, so there is a constant squeeze on labour, to keep costs low, but naturally the expectation is that service quality and efficiency is constantly improving. I believe it's a finite and restricting business model.
