A place to gain senior VCE teaching experience, but one you’ll likely outgrow quickly.
The good thingsSome colleagues are hardworking and genuinely care about students. There is potential for growth if the school strengthens its leadership structures. The school community itself has potential, with many students who want to learn. St Francis Xavier College has potential but is currently held back by cultural issues, inconsistent expectations, and a lack of strong leadership. For graduate teachers or those seeking a supportive, structured environment, this may not be the ideal workplace.
The challengesNo Heads of Department for core subjects. High administrative demands placed on academic staff. Limited leadership accountability. Unstainable teaching loads (often two year 12 classes). Large class sizes especially for core subjects (28 students). A lack of academic rigor. The mean VCE study score continues to decrease. Little to no accountability for students in terms of behaviour and academic performance.

A school that prioritises looking good on paper, but simply has nothing to show for it. AVOID!
The good thingsThe staff you work with at the bottom level are lovely and collegial
The challengesTerrible school overall! There is no focus on academic performance (median dropping ever year); zero discipline enforced; students get away with anything and everything (the TikTok videos are true). The directors of wellbeing are all about making friends. The campus head does not know your name or what you teach. The principal is never around and has no idea who's who (has never even met me after 3 years). No learning area leaders, so the more experienced teachers have to assume this role without the pay increase or time release. You are almost always asked, "what else can you do for this student", "how can you improve practice", etc., when there are serious culture and management issues that need to be resolved first before asking overworked teachers to just magically make things work.

If you want to be overlooked, run to the ground and disrespected then by all means go for it. If you don't, then run for the hills.
The good thingsThe People I worked with and a handful of nice students.
The challengesStudents who are not disciplined appropriately/let off scot-free with high disrespect for teaching staff. Upper management is terrible, does not care about their employees whatsover.

Toxic, toxic, toxic. I have decided teaching is no longer for me due to just how badly this place has demoralised me.
The good thingsStaff at teaching level very supportive. Holidays. Walking out the door after quitting.
The challengesManagement (definitely not leadership) completely out of touch. A POL structure that doesn't work. No support for staff from upper levels. Huge staff attrition, classes that haven't had permanent teachers for many weeks.

No staff or student support from leadership and principal non existent … hence the teachers and middle staff run the school
The good thingsAmazing teachers and some great kids … some wonderful parents and staff supporting each other .
The challengesTerrible terrible leadership who sit in ivory towers and have no idea of the problems going on in the school. All talk no action. No resolutions to student issues.. pushed into Pls that were not implemented by leadership … PowerPoint warriors in PL presentations with no real experience of the real world of education. No talk from the heart or mind. Lacked authenticity!

    Supportive staff and wonderful students.
The good thingsGreat Staff; students really appreciate everything that you do to support them. The leadership is supportive of the staff and has lots of PL opportunities.
The challengesIt takes some time to get used to working in a multi-campus school, but that also provides lots of opportunities for advancement.

The good thingsProgressive Innovation encouraged Focused on building staff capacity Opportunities to grow skill set
The challengesNaturally there is complexity in being one school with 3 campuses, however this is also such an opportunity to grow skill set.

I made great friends, but lost confidence in my teaching abilities due to the toxic environment supported by leadership.
The good thingsFriendly grassroots teachers. Very collegial.
The challengesLeadership. They show no interest whatsoever in staff member. All talk, but no action! They are so removed from the reality of toxic students, and there is no support for teachers. There is a continual exodus of fantastic teachers who cannot cope with leadership and their out-of-touch decisions.

    Oh SFX, what happened?
The good thingsThe peers I worked with were fantastic.
The challengesDealing with a school management team whose answer to everything is, "If you don't like it, leave." Until the current management team took over, the school was a pleasure to work in. It's reputation in the community was fantastic. From 2016 onwards, there has been a steady, but significant decline, (as evidenced by the other reviews here). To put it simply, there is a very good reason that the school is sending emails to staff asking them to get their friends to apply for jobs.

    Toxic and disappointing.
The good thingsOther staff at same level or below were friendly and collegial, mostly.
The challengesManagement lacks direction and despite several restructures/reviews in a number of areas such as IT and Library, still don't seem certain about exactly what they want from department leaders.

    Never again
The good thingsSome great staff members that are warm and welcoming.
The challengesMost of the executive team are unsupportive, out of touch, distant and place a huge amount of stress on their staff. At times it felt like staff members were hung out to dry by management with only rumours as evidence. They’ve lost some amazing members and have had a huge yearly turnover since new management and restructure began.
