St.Giles has a strong vision that is being promoted well
The good thingsAble to work in the industry where it supports people living with disabilities. St.Giles has a strong vision that is being promoted well, and is evident through strong values. Communication has improved significantly over the past 2-3 years, and team members feel valued and can have active input into service planning. Flexible work arrangements also exist.
The challengesSystems are fairly new or being implemented so there are challenges with adapting processes and setting consistent expectations within these

It’s a wonderful organisation to be a part of, which is evolving and growing
The good thingsPD opportunities, varied client loads, supportive team, great facilities. It’s a wonderful organisation to be a part of, which is evolving and growing, and employees and client voices are heard through various feedback models.

    Such a shame!!
The good thingsWhen I first started over 5 years ago it was a family friendly and kind organisation
The challengesA management change in early 2023 tipped the organisation on its head. As soon as this changed happened it turned into a place I wouldn’t wish on my worse enemy. It is not a nice place to be and no one seems to care.

The good thingsThe vision is coming to fruition and there’s a buzz that positive change is coming especially after a rocky few years with movement in senior leadership
The challengesStill struggling with legacy processes.

Great environment to learn and contribute to the sustainability of a Tasmanian Organisation
The good thingsThere is a very supportive culture whereby staff are encouraged to contribute, put forward ideas and initiatives to make a long lasting difference. Premises are lovely. New management structures are effective and communication is improving.

The absolute worst place I have ever worked. I loved my job until it all changed, I was number 12 to walk out and so many others have left since.
The good thingsIt was wonderful until management changed, so many amazing people left.
The challengesCruel management- one has left like a fruit fly, rot the place then moved on, others still there.

Started out great and has on a downhill slope since 2022
The good thingsflexible workplace for families, paid maternity leave, salary sacrifice, EA, excellent workmates and friendships.
The challengesManagement team, management employing friends, rules for some and not for others, no training for people not experienced with the NDIS

    Cheerful
The good thingsI’m new, but the people & colleagues are welcoming and openly share information. Lots of laughs making for fun shifts while making a difference
The challengesLots of contact from management and fostering outside of shifts, which feels like a lot to start with.

Well supported and lots of varied work on offer
The good thingsFlexibility and availability of work makes it easier to manage your week and maximise your time.
The challengesWorking with complex participants can be difficult, but it’s very rewarding. St Giles are good at helping you find balance in your participant cohort

Great for people who aren’t interested in a 9-5 job
The good thingsPlenty of work especially being a male worker. Lots of participants are looking for more peer type support and mateship, so a shift never really feels like a work day.
The challengesLots of forms and paperwork to do each day, most is relevant.

I am currently looking for the right opportunity to return to St Giles
The good thingsPeople, dynamic and varied work, challenging and rewarding. I was fortunate to hold three roles in my time at St Giles, whilst I’m not there at the moment, I’d return in a heart beat.
The challengesNDIS is expecting lots of admin and documentation but isn’t funding it.

    Working with purpose
The good thingsEnthusiastic colleagues who establish trust with each other and build rapport so you can bounce of each other, a lot happening and a lot to do - work with purpose.
The challengesLots of change in participant needs occurring between shifts, it can be hard to keep up. I was also looking for work elsewhere due to behaviour and interactions of two others, however they’ve since been shown the door. It’s great to see leaders listening and now taking action for conduct that doesn’t align.

Supportive environment that’s going through lots of good change
The good thingsMy team have been nothing but supportive of me and my growth, I have felt seen and valid every day of my career with St Giles from being a support worker to now being given various opportunities to step up.
The challengesI feel staff could all be given lots more in-depth training relevant to the clients we work with.

Am trusted to use my professional judgement and skills which is a nice environment to be in.
The good thingsSupport staff are trusted to use their professional judgement and skills and are able to seek help when needed. There use to be too many coordinators and managers who never really knew what was happening, however this has been changing over past six months meaning more consistency. Lots of bad eggs have left. And now we get asked to be involved in support/goal planning etc
The challengesThe recruitment and onboarding process takes a long time, especially for part time work.

Great way to control your work life balance.
The good thingsAbility to make a difference. Ability to pick up additional work. Ability to grow within the sector.
The challengesSometimes working with complex behaviours can be challenging. I prefer working with people who have more health related or physical supports.

I have now resigned, I wish I got out a few months ago. Culture has gone.
The good thingsThe people I have met on my journey at St Giles (no longer working with me now). Resigning
The challengesHigher management, cost cuts, undervalued employees. Nice a nice place to work. Not healthy for mental health

    Recruiting
The good thingsThe history and the renewed vision. We are in a unique position to assist participants and families needing both Allied Health and Care supports. There are lots of activities occurring to ensure our sustainability long term, and staff are actively involved in this revived approach.
The challengesChallenges of operating under the NDIS scheme aren’t widely understood, so there are cultural issues that stem from some tough decisions being made. Not just by St Giles. If ppl took time to listen, they’d see that the org is moving in a really positive way. Finding good quality professional staff has been tricky especially in AH, so if you know of ppl with great morals and intentions… this is a place for you long term.

    Things need to change.
The good thingsI did once enjoy working for St giles as the participants were great. It’s unfortunately not what it use to be. Higher management do not listen nor try to fix what’s now broken.
The challengesManagement are to focused on the new development and not focusing on fixing what is currently there and supporting the needs of participants. It’s sad to see staff and participants leaving after being there so long

The good thingsI’ve been with st giles for a long time now and was supported to return following maternity leave. Rostering gave me a new roster in the same house in line with my new availability and that really made coming back easier.
The challengesPerceived and actual staffing shortages means there can be a lot of requests to work above your normal base roster.
