Melbourne VIC 3000Less than 1 year in the role, former employee
Possibly the overall worst job experience I've had in 25 years of working in Sales and Marketing roles.
The good thingsWell respected company and brand
The challengesPossibly the most stressful job I've ever had. Awful communication from Management, unrealistic and unclear expectations, poor morale amongst other workers, very bad communication, onboarding and training process was the worst I've ever experienced, out of pocket expenses took well over a month to get re-imbursed, too many more negative comments to mention. Had so many high hopes for this role but unfortunately it wasn't to be.

The challengesSometimes the equipment might not be upto date. There isnt many negatives to mention.

It's ok, could be better, but management dont listen.
The good thingsWork colleagues, they make the difference that's really it.
The challengesManagement don't listen, over work staff and pretty much add on more work. They don't offer anymore: health and wellbeing offers. team building activities, never done an activity in the years I have been here. additional leave days which only happened during covid. We don't have engaging and active social club, haven't for a few years.

The challengesmanagement has no idea, no leadership, no pathway for promotion, professional development lacking, salary very low for work people do, very disappointing for such an iconic brand

I'm proud to wear the St John greens at work knowing that I am representing a wonderful company that cares for their employees as much as their patients.
The good thingsSafety is a top priority, mental and physical. St John has set a precedent that the wellbeing of their employees is valued on par with the wellbeing and treatment of their patients. The expectations from the company is that you take your time, ask for help, do not put yourself in a dangerous situation.
The challengesFinding shifts as a casual worker on short notice, but it is expected that might be the case with a company that well run. Jobs get booked at hospitals and texts go out requesting help. Some days you are lucky and others day you may not be lucky. It's a challenge that is created by the nature of health care though and is not necessarily a bad thing, just the nature of how and when patients are transferred and discharged.

    Very Welcoming
The good things2 months into the role, they've all made me feel so welcomed. My manager and everyone else are so kind and always willing to teach. My first day was so well planned out and so was the onboarding experience and the induction. So much thought put into the little things.
The challengesThe interview was a little challenging. The questions were well structured but the panel was nice enough to allow me to take my time and patient with my answers.

    Most supportive workplace in Melbourne
The good thingsDuring the training process they went above and beyond to make sure I was ready and confident before setting up accreditation. The other trainers have been very supportive and welcoming.
The challengesLike with any job the technology has its challenges, tending to fail at the worst possible moments.

Big on integrity and welcomes and acknowledges new ideas
The good thingsGreat manager - open to new ideas, transparent, and understands the demands of my job. The other trainers are positive and supportive. And the learner cohort are concentrated in only a few sectors so I can contextualise the training more effectively
The challengesThe TAE program at St John was designed around classroom delivery - as they've gone online with COVID there are ICT and eLearning opportunities they still need to catch up on.

    Great job, Great Company
The good thingsStaff and colleagues all lovely to work for and with. Opportunities to attend interesting events (and get paid for it)! During COVID the company has continued to source and provide work.
The challengesOften not knowing shifts more than a day in advance, but this is due to the casual nature of the role.

I have made some excellent friends and continue to be surprised by some of the events I attend.
The good thingsExcluding the months of stand down for Covid 19, there was an abundance of shifts available around Melbourne that a member could express interest in. No two shifts were the same, different venues, different team members, different assigned roles for the event. There were members whom you could approach that would be open to discussions, mentoring, asking advice or just talking to in an open and friendly manner. Working for St John Ambulance Victoria allows me to serve humanity in a way of my choosing whereby my local community and then the greater community of Melbourne will benefit. Receiving recognition and praise from cohorts or the public shows me that my service is appreciated.
The challengesWhen I'm providing medical aid to a patient of a different culture, race, or religion, there will always be hurdles that you need to be mindful of. Whether by using a translator, hand signals or technology. You need to overcome these obstacles in a professional and discreet manner keeping the patients dignity and beliefs at the forefront of any action taken by yourself.

Great workplace and essential service for the community
The good thingsGreat job working for a great company. It shows how vital St John is to the community in many aspects. Working with such a wide range of people allows for an increase in clinical and non-clinical skills in the job.
The challengesWorking at a wide variety of workplaces brings on its own natural challenges, but with great support from the staff and managment it makes this process easier

Having completed a Cert III in Non Emergency Patient Transport with St John, I was lucky enough to secure a role with the Deceased Person Transport team, I have found this to be both a challenging and very rewarding role. From there, I got a role with the Patient Transport team and now perform a dual role working within both teams. The team I work with are really good, they each bring something else to the table. I’m looking forward to working here while studying to become a paramedic.

Amazing Culture and somewhere I am able to develop my career in a challenging role and have experienced management support and coaching at every step.
The good thingsIts an amazing organisation to work for. One that gets you to reflect on \"Why\" are you doing what you're doing and how is that contributing to the vision and mission of the organisation \"For the Service of Humanity\".
The challengesThe processes sometimes can be bit too much for a not for profit organisation.

Awesome operational team hamstrung by head office types.
The good thingsThe operational staff base is currently incredible. A fantastic mix of knowledgeable health care workers with empathy and drive.
The challengesUpper management has zero respect for the efforts of operational staff. Enormous changes prompted by changes in the structure of the ambulance system. Clear condescension of operational staff from vastly less qualified volunteers and management.

Love my job, but feel undervalued / disappointed.
The good thingsThe people, the job & salary packaging options.
The challengesCertain members of \"Management\" seem to regard feedback from well meaning and dedicated staff, an inconvenience and hassle, despite initially inviting staff to offer suggestions in the first place. The feedback and those offering it, then seem to be regarded as though they are being negative or complaining. This is not the case and relates more to the fact that the so called leaders in question, have little or no idea about the true operational realities of the role, because they have never done it. The \"open door\" policy is also a myth - they don't really want to hear what you have to say and if you put anything in writing via email, 99% of time it is not acknowledged. There is also little or no acknowledgement for going the extra mile from a key member of Management / senior staff, which has greatly impacted morale, to a point where most staff will now only do their rostered hours and have become less willing to do more, because it's not appreciated. More acknowledgement (including a fair hourly rate for challenging work) and improved basic communication skills, such as eye contact and a simple greeting in the morning from the Manager, would no doubt make a world of difference to how staff feel. When employees feels valued and appreciated, they feel happy and that equates to a more positive working environment. Currently there needs to be a vast improvement.
