    Paramedics - Don't do it
The good thingsOccasionally got to work as a paramedic, and do paramedic things
The challengesThe service appears to be heavily focused on image and branding, with limited operational or clinical support from management. Clinical governance is weak, with outdated protocols and practices that do not reflect contemporary paramedic standards. The workplace culture is toxic, characterised by a pervasive “not my job” mentality that undermines teamwork and prevents the development of a cohesive, supportive environment. Despite roles being advertised as suitable for experienced paramedics, autonomy is significantly reduced in practice, with clinicians often treated as little more than transport providers rather than trusted professionals. Prior training, qualifications, and experience are given minimal recognition. Training practices are particularly concerning; rather than addressing identified deficiencies through structured education, the organisational response to several serious incidents has been to further restrict scope of practice, compounding the problem instead of fixing.

Never work for St John dental it is toxic even though they believe they have values THEY DO NOT !!!
The good thingsNothing, terrible experience unsupported and vindictive behaviour by management in dental department
The challengesManagement needs to be accountable for the way they treat staff

Worked hard but was failed by management.
The good thingsSome autonomy and working with diverse groups to lead and mentor.
The challengesUpper management in dental. There is some drastic leadership reviews needed. Top tier needs to be stronger. One manager needs to uptake psychosocial training ASAP. Some exclusion goes on. Once you challenge ideas you are pushed out.

Very good. I would increase the number of training days or change the focus of the training
The good thingsAs an EHS volunteer, I have had an incredible experience, with very good, kind colleagues who love what they do and are there to teach you.
The challengesI think that six days of training is not enough (many of my colleagues agree), because there are many topics that are not covered in the course (for example, how to communicate by radio/telephone, the organization of the ambulance interior) and this means that when you do your first shift, your partner has to teach you things that you should already know (and there is not always time for this because sometimes we have patients throughout the entire shift). Furthermore, the six-day course is not enough to really know how to treat someone/differentiate or fully understand a pathology or problem, and that makes it more challenging. Over time, you gain experience and then it becomes easier to identify the problem and know what to do.

I would have submitted a general protections claim if only the window was longer.
The good thingsThe actual people you work with on the ground are the best thing about the place. The work is meaningful and you there’s a sense of communal pride.
The challengesThe org needs to get better at change management. Massive cultural issues despite the work that’s been done with big initiatives over the last few years. Huge workload that can never match remuneration due to being a non for profit. Walked away disheartened and burnt out, told by a manager “the grass isn’t always greener on the other side” when asked for feedback about my resignation.

Best job - Awful Company St John are an awful company to work for. They are experts in glossy propaganda. Senior management and directors don't care about their staff, patients or the community. Great on road Paramedics

The good thingsExecutive leadership have invested time and money in development. Great flexibility a d work life balance. There is also progression opportunities in other roles within the organisation.
The challengesMost roles are demanding due to out dated systems but senior management are investing in new systems.

Went in with such high hopes, left needing trauma counselling.
The good thingsThere are some truly dedicated people at St John WA, mostly volunteers and ambulance officers though. It was great, while it was good.
The challengesUnsupportive executive although most of them have since left. Ridiculous hours with zero recognition of the impact on managers.

You’ll leave the other side stronger and more resilient than you did entering.
The good thingsYou’ll bend well with your team and many others. That being said, it’s the joint feeling of negativity that will drive any team bonding.
The challengesIt’s a rather toxic environment. Majority of efforts to improve are simply tick box exercises. Leadership & management is done exclusively through micro management. Change is poorly handled and driven most by the desire of someone higher up wanting to save face. Resourcing is strict, but manageable. But the expectations are based on the assumption of unlimited resources and best in class facilities, equipment, systems.

Poor management practices, ineffective leadership, and questionable decision-making have created noticeable issues at my workplace. The atmosphere is tainted by toxic behaviours. Safety concerns are widespread, yet they are consistently overlooked, creating a worrying environment that compromises employees well-being. Every safety issue is seemingly brushed aside, contributing to an unsettling atmosphere where employees feel vulnerable and unheard. I had higher expectations for St John WA.
The good thingsHaving a few supportive and positive colleagues has truly been a bright spot in my job. Unfortunately, the overall workplace environment is extremely toxic, making it challenging to trust anyone.
The challengesTaking on various tasks beyond my job role has become a regular thing. Unfortunately, there's no support from management, making the work environment quite toxic. The lack of support adds an extra layer of challenge to handling responsibilities outside my designated role.

Biggest regret career-wise. So, so much potential for this organisation to shine! An utter disappointment.
The good thingsMy colleagues, the most wonderful group of people to work with, saddening to have to leave them behind. Being able to now warn others not to work there.

IGNORANCE IS BLISS. Potential for an AMAZING workplace shrouded by poor management and executives.
The good thingsWork relationship with staff is incredible, you will be hard pressed to find more caring, and kind people within a working environment/Work family. Be it your application is successful; know you will go into a welcoming team who will be and are the only reason you will want to stay.
The challengesThe Management... Support is non-existent! No direction within department. In colloquial, within a week i was advised of issues by other staff hence the high turnover, as time progressed this only got worse. HR and Executives... Will ignore ALL correspondences, whether it be a problem, solution, or query of workplace wellbeing. ZERO care for employees, and certainly have no drive to improve the workplace or business beyond covering their own behinds and gathering a paycheck.

St John WA is a great employer for people to give back to their community by supporting and improving local health services, with reasonable employment packages, good work/life balance and support for career development
The good things- Friendly, competent staff - Salary above government roles, with additional benefits - Great work/life balance and flexibility
The challenges- More administration/bureaucracy compared to other industries - there are significant requirements to operate a health service in WA - Salary doesn't quite meet the market, which is predominantly driven by the higher paying resources sector

Not the place for career growth.
The good thingsFriendly coworkers who understand the struggle
The challengesManagement is poor, many tasks come in last minute and don't stick to the plan. The exec and board level can never make up their mind so it creates a culture of last-minute snap decisions which make it difficult to work towards.

    The good thingsFriendly co workers
The challengesTerribly managed with growing pressure and expectations on staff to work under stressful conditions with little to no company recognition or reward. The pay is abysmal, practice managers are micro managed by head office management who have no care or respect for the admin staff.

Deep regret wasting so many years at this organization, wished I had trained in something else. Desperate to get out but limited options as sole emergency ambulance service in Perth.
The good thingsMy colleagues on road are like family and very supportive. Loved the job once, not so much through the pandemic.
The challengesUpper management, politics and their general detest for officers/ paramedics. Toxic workplace culture. All perks being slowly removed. Expected to work with less staff, equipment braking, ramping and do it faster and longer with no reward or encouragement. Pushed to point of breaking regularly. No appreciation or loyalty for years of service. Staff seen as a transient commodity, no career encouragement.

Working for this organisation isn’t worth the stress.
The good thingsBeing a paramedic is spectacular and there are the small rare moments you feel like you’ve contributed to someone in need.
The challengesThe organisation is a private organisation that is only focused on its name brand and image. This results in poor clinical protocols and lack of support to staff on the front line.

I enjoyed my time with the IT Applications team at St John, and it was a privilege to be involved with such a real world application of technology. I only left because I found a remote first opportunity, which is something I was used to in past roles.
The good thingsIt was exciting and rewarding working on critical software systems that serve to assist the state ambulance service, as well as the community. I enjoyed working with the IT Applications team, they're a great bunch of people with a good mix of tech skills to learn off.
The challengesThe office environment was noisy and working from home options were limited.

The good thingsYou feel a part of the contribution to the community. The wonderful service that St John provide is so much more than the general public awareness. A truly rewarding company striving for excellence within the community.
