    Good experience and company.
The good thingsLovely staff, and provides a great opportunity to build confidence in relevant tasks like taking phone calls, orders, stock and invoices, building rapport with customers, and I have such a bizarrely large amount of knowledge about shoes.
The challengesUnfortunately customers / retail are the down fall of this job. The job itself is great but the customer service aspect can be the challenging part at times, like any retail job really.

Great co-workers but constant money driven and upselling pressure from management.
The good thingsCo-workers were the best part of this place and the brand reps that came in to visit. Discount on shoes and first dibs when a new shoe came in.
The challengesManagement were awful. Constant pressure to sell and upsell things, especially during back to school. Was taught to only care about how many pairs of shoes and extras we can make in a sale instead of focusing on the customer and their needs. I worked in numerous stores and it was all the same. Management didn't care about staff wellbeing. Extremely money driven place to work.

Great team, but terrible lack of management.
The good thingsThe team is the best thing about this job
The challengesAbsolutely no management (no manager or 2IC). Store is run by casuals. Franchisee MIA most of the time. No conflict resolution. No opportunity for growth.

    Fantastic and informative.
The good thingsI love working with my team. Working as part of a franchise team it becomes a bit more of a family which is great because I know I'll get backed up in the best and worst times. You gain an appreciation for the science and tech that goes into runners and work shoes.
The challengesWorking with challenging customers who may take up to an hour of your time in service and end up buying nothing. Most of the time it's okay though because the customer usually walks away more informed and appreciative.

    Good employees, Bad Management
The good thingsInteracting with customers and other employees
The challengesThe management do not care about you, only themselves. They treat you like you are disposable. The store I was in was not organised and no one knew what they were doing.

The good thingsWorking as a part of a franchise model you become very involved into the operations and dealing of the store.
The challengesNot much move for further development below a franchisor, other than buying in.

Great in store team and perks, upper state level management could improve.
The good thingsTeam and lower store level management
The challengesUpper management very stressed to achieve goals, however just push the goals don’t show you how to develop your skills to reach the goals. Very money focussed

The good thingsGreat people to work with, fast-paced work place, with good friendship

Great people, comfortable environment with flexibility for shifts but so repetitive and disappointing when you have a boss who doesn't care about you.
The good thingsThe people made the entire job worth it. Knowing you have people you can rely on is such a nice thing. The discounts are great for particular brands and the brand incentives are good to push you to sell more.
The challengesNot a concern for all stores but having an owner who only cares about numbers and figures was the main issue for everything. Not a people person in the slightest, went back on things that were first said and always felt under appreciated unless you happened to have good numbers. The amount of technology issues that occurred over the years was ridiculous and having a boss not willing to spend a bit of extra money to fix them was annoying as hell. As a smaller store, we also missed out on selling opportunities when shoes were pinched and taken to other stores to be sold and then we got the blame when sales were low.

Many ups and downs but my overall memories are fond.
The good thingsThere are a lot of progression options for management positions, the pay rate is higher than the average and the head office crew are actually interested in the individual person.
The challengesAs a casual, you are sometimes viewed as another number, however, if you perform well this can change.

Loved every second of my time with The athletes foof
The good thingsI work under two different franchisees and was honestly blessed with netting new friends, building knowledge, work opportunities and career progression. I work there during my university time while study bachelor of education. The athletes foot let me attend school visits for the company to help get my name out there to potential future employees.
The challengesThe retail business can always be testing but it helps you build knowledge and experience for the next time

Working at a franchisee was one thousand times better.
The good thingsGreat place to deliver solutions to customers in need of certain shoe requirements. Providing the service is very satisfying and fulfilling.
The challengesThe management process. The companies policies make it very hard for team members' in-store to progress and often get blamed for the issues that originate from head office.

The challengesTerrible management and if you have one bad day (because the store is not busy at all) your shifts get cut without warning. Unfair place to work and not enough hours.

Fun and supportive team but very challenging environment at times
The good thingsWorking in a franchised store was like having a close-knit work family. My colleagues were supportive and friendly, and it was great team. Head office contacts were excellent mentors and always happy to help out, plus they generally trusted the store to do the right thing and take charge if a difficult situation came up. Benefits are great-- plenty of discounts on shoes and sports apparel! Lots of opportunities for training both within the company and offered by suppliers.
The challengesAt this point in time the company is going through a face lift and change of direction. This meant that head office as a whole seemed to lack direction, and that the brand that is emerging was not exactly aligned with my reasons for joining when I began. Management on a store level is somewhat poor and senior staff don't always have management training so this makes it difficult to take advice and mentorship from superiors. The work is physically demanding, and caused me to sustain multiple injuries which were related to repetitive movements. This is especially true during January, the busiest period of the year.

The franchise over corporate business within The Athletes Foot had provided me with great contentment and enjoyment working for those that take care of their community and staff members.
The good thingsIt definitely allows anyone working for The Athlete's Foot to improve social skills, providing great interactions with people whilst still allowing the freedom to incorporate your style on helping someone out.
The challengesBesides the typical tough customer to work around, recent direction changes within The Athlete's Foot has unfortunately caused more challenges. This covers the lack of focus on assisting franchised stores, staff, training, responsibility/role changes and communication to getting in products that are needed get disregarded. Getting around some of these have shown to be a lot more difficult under the corporate structure than the franchised structure.
