Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.
The good thingsI enjoyed the variety in work and mostly good managers and people, and respectful customers.
The challengesWhile working at TRS I experienced frequent victim-blaming, rudeness and inappropriate workplace behaviors, which when brought up were ignored by HR.

Incredibly exhausting and stressful for a casual position
The good thingsThe coworkers and customers
The challengesManagement were horrible, expected you to be able to do 100 things all at once in a short amount of time including unloading 6 pallets onto cages, putting all stock from said cages onto the floor, clean the entire store top to bottom, be on check out, help customers, answer phones, take over for management when away so also getting refills for cash draws, authorising refund etc all while they went to do god knows what. and if not all of that got done exactly perfect would get yelled at and written up. Also tried to pressure me into becoming part time over staying casual. Also was expected to come in no matter how sick nor could i go home if i became sick at work and was told after throwing up in staff room sink that no one could come in and i would have to stay.

Too much expectation and work overload. They give you a limited budget to spend on staff and then expect you to do sixteen to twenty pallets pretty much by yourself and then you have to do office work, new set ups in the store and change stock around in different locations at the same time. A lot of the time you will only have a manager and a team member operating a register daily so you can't even give customers the best service possible because you have so many things going on in the store and no staff for them to approach on the shop floor. They expect way too much in this company. I see up to ten staff working at a small grocery store than I do working with this company.
The good thingsThe customers, good team, flexible with hours
The challengesToo much to do with limited staff due to tight budgets

Great part time job while going through uni/ school. would not recommend becoming store manager
The good thingsGreat job for teenager/ uni student. Progression is good to become a team leader.
The challengesOverwhelming stock levels over xmas and easter and on and off through out the whole year. some area managers and state managers can have no idea what its like working at store level and seem out of touch with reality. Some older store managers either can't handle the work load or they some how get away this day in age with old school mentality and how they treat/ speak to team members is not very PC.

Horrible manager and not a good job at all Manager would go on smoke breaks for around 30 mins accumulated every shift but would barely allow us to go for bathroom breaks and we had to rush our breaks. They also keep rostering me on days I have said I’m unavailable on and get furious when I try to cancel. Worst place

Great for a casual job for a student or person with another job but would not make this my main gig because of the pay.
The good thingsIt's a great first job and very flexible if you have other commitments such as Uni or other jobs which I both have. I'm very fortunate to have good management and great coworkers, some are a bit lazy though because you can get away with just standing at the register rotting. Weekend rates are great.
The challengesThe pay is a bit low if you're part time and it only goes up $1 when you're a team leader, not fair when job is very busy and you need to be really fit to do it and dealing with customers who have their own personal anger and lash it out on retail workers. Worst part is the customers, they're horrid

Worst Job i've ever worked for
The good thingsThe only good thing about working here is if you are a very young teen or a uni student who is okay with horrible hours and mediocre pay.
The challengesEverything. To the pay, the contracts for part time hours which is no where near enough, the way they let people in the wrong get away with EVERYTHING even after having a case filed by multiple co-workers. and not to mention the mental ANGUISH you go through.

I hated working for the reject shop worst working experience I have ever had, literally crying before shifts because I dreaded going into work. This also wasn't just at one store either, this happened at 3 different stores.
The good thingsIt started out fine I suppose but as soon as my friend left though it went really bad
The challengesManagement is Zero help, I was being treated very poorly, I made multiple complaints to my manager and the reginal manager, and they did absolutely nothing. Incredibly understaffed and under trained! teach the bare minimum and then they hope for the best. When I eventually left, I didn't get an exist interview, my manager decided that day she was going to leave early, and they didn't even say a single word to me but did leave me 6 pallets full of stock for me to work by myself... Also, they like to cut corners, instead of having an Assistant Manager, they would have team leaders, I was one and then gave the other role to a 16-year-old because they could then make her part time and only pay her $12 an hour and she was also super underqualified.

Trained in a small regional store and then placed in a extremly busy store with excessive amount of shop lifters and lots and lots of stock
The good thingsRegional Manager was easy to get along with
The challengesThe stock just kept on coming, you need to be a super fit and always on your feet running stock all day every day while also trying to run your store operations and helping with customer service, covering check outs. Honestly felt like I was often doing the job of 3 people in a very busy shopping centre.

Flexible first job for students who want retail experience but low pay and typical retail pressures
The good thingsA good job for students in high school or university who need flexibility. It’s a decent option for a first job. My managers were kind and adaptable, despite clearly being overworked, underpaid, and facing a lot of pressure from higher-ups. I was fortunate to work under managers who didn’t let those challenges affect how they treated their staff.
The challengesThe pay isn’t great, and the hours can be inconsistent. Plus you face the usual retail challenges— constant pressure to meet KPIs and upsell, even when it’s clearly frustrating for customers. Not ideal for progressing into management, but as a casual job for extra cash while studying, it's not bad.

Being a casual shelf filler/store person was great fun and rewarding. Learning to organise the shelf displays while working alongside others was a fun experience. Once I stepped into management it was a different story. Below average salary income, working long days sometimes 12-15 hours depending on catalogue set ups and the constant pressure from head office wanting higher expectations with income and budget due to a rival company across the road putting pressure on them.
The good thingsWorking as a team in a fun environment, staff discount.
The challengesTrying to meet management's expectations, company budget etc.

Surprisingly enjoyable to work here. Shame a casual gets very limited hours.
The good thingsThe work environment is pretty relaxed with support training of registers on first day. Work itself is pretty easygoing depending on which area you work and the time of year. Company promotes equal opportunity and protecting mental health, work, life, balance. Staff 15% discount. Pay rate is very reasonable.
The challengesConfusing mis-information with hours in interview stating 15 hours a week and maybe more later. Actual hours according to The Reject Shop Agreement 2018 and 2023 for a Casual is a minimum of 3 hours/maximum 9 hours per week and more likely you will get given the minimum. It depends if that suits you or not. Temptations of being surrounded by lollies at checkout on shift.

The good thingsnothing good about this company what so ever, didn’t wanna train me but told me I didn’t advance fast enough even though I had been employed for a month.
The challengesthis company is so much drama, all the employees that are there have only ever had one job so making a transition from another company they will completely not understand!

I loved The Reject Shop and will always have fond memories.
The good thingsI enjoyed the multitude of learning experiences, having your hard work and efforts acknowledged and being given great oppertunities for shining in set tasks.
The challengesThe daily challenges were most often divided fairly and the worst challenges would most often be the rude and cruel customers who don't care much about you as an individual

    Unhealthy
The good thingsThe people I worked with where nice. Sometimes.
The challengesPhysically the expectations where ridiculous. Alone you are meant to open and distribute loads of goods with out help. If you question it with management you are told, Apparently other people can do it. Super unhealthy and unreasonable. I hurt my back working there. AND when I complained I was told I lacked motivation.
