Shrinking newsroom, high workload, minimal resources. “Competitive” salary not included. The good thingsDecent “learning experience” as a first job if you have the right team. I worked with some skilled journalists, but many unfortunately left for better pay and working conditions elsewhere. EAP program was great because it was definitely needed!
The challengesMass redundancies of sub-editors left stories being published riddled with errors and with little to no fact-checking. HR was effectively non-existent when serious misconduct was reported, and any regional newsrooms north of the metropolitan seemed to be treated as an afterthought. The organisation was constantly short-staffed in the regions yet struggled to retain journalists, with pressure to produce high volumes of stories with minimal resources. While time in lieu was technically offered, workloads and output expectations remained unchanged, often resulting in chronic unpaid overtime.
