Senior management will actively work against genuine change to preserve their own positions.
The good thingsI worked with some very good Teachers and Coordinators.
The challengesManagement do not understand the day to day challenges the staff face in delivering the curriculum to students. Senior Management focus on KPIs but have no idea what the means for Teachers. Rosters do not meet the Award but that was ignored for 7 years - when it was attempted to be addressed, a "review" resulted in performance management for the person trying to instigate positive change and an incompetent manager with no Industry experience (but lots of irrelevant opinions) put in place instead.

Needs Improvement in Processes, Support, and Culture
    The good thingsSuperannuation, Benefits
The challengesThe organisation would benefit from clearer, more streamlined processes. Support and career development opportunities are limited, both external and internal complaints are not always addressed with the seriousness they deserve.

    A race to the bottom
The good thingsCamaraderie with other staff
The challengesExtremely toxic workplace with no research culture. Senior research 'leaders' with no peer-reviewed publications to their name. Red flags left right and centre when it comes to the management of research funding.

    One star is too many.
The good thingsI made some fantastic friends.
The challengesEntirely ineffectual management, toxic culture, nonsensical decision making, shocking lack of knowledge despite an ageing workforce. The organisation seems to punish talent and celebrate mediocrity.

    I worry for VU's future.
The good thingsExcellent camaraderie within teams.
The challengesAppalling management. Zero concern for employee morale, improving work processes, or even the bottom line (!). Just a series of bizarre and seemingly random decisions.

    Stressful and demoralising
The good things- Great bunch of colleagues and friendly staff. - Maybe once the new CHRO starts they can help turn things around.
The challenges- Workloads and expectations were too high with too limited staffing budget and a organisational culture of poor planning means every request was urgent. - This is a complex organisation and there was a lot of change taking place at speed which created uncertainty, knowledge gaps and mistakes. - Senior leaders responded to complaints reactively rather than with engagement to try and comprehend the underlying issues, thus exacerbating the workload issues operational teams were facing.

Worried for the future of this University
    The good thingsSuperannuation is good
The challengesIncoherent middle management put in roles they shouldn’t be in, unable to make decisions and can’t lead teams. Archaic views and not up with current times.

    A demoralising place to work
The good thingsThe ‘worker bee’ staff are extremely talented and hardworking. A great bunch of people.
The challengesExpect to do the roles of at least two (sometimes three) people, as roles are rarely replaced when people leave the staffing budget is then allocated elsewhere. No professional development despite there being dedicated PD budget. Agencies are valued over talented in-house staff. Abhorrent management in this area - truly the worst or the worst.

No place for quality research or teaching
The good thingsSome nice people and some supportive senior academics.
The challengesThe research fellowship system is terrible. Having to apply for time to do research makes little sense and penalises early career researchers. If you hire researchers they must have research time as part of their salaried hours. If you aren't willing to offer this, stop hiring researchers. The block teaching model is bad for students and staff alike. The time burden becomes extraordinary during a block and prevents any other work being done for a 4-week period. It leads to low quality education. Concerns are dismissed or silenced. Very little existing research expertise and no infrastructure for developing expertise outside sport science and niche areas of biomedicine. The institution-wide disorganisation was astonishing.

Apart from the mostly dedicated and caring people I met along the way, a disappointing experience.
The good thingsThere are some very talented and passionate people at VU who genuinely care about the students. My immediate team was terrific.
The challengesLeadership is extremely poor, from the top down. Directors with their own agendas and little care for staff or the work being performed. Staff are overworked as the organisation does not invest in its staff or spend money sensibly. As people leave they are not replaced, so be prepared to do the equivalent of two or more jobs for the salary of one.
