Once upon a time was a great place, but now a sterile and toxic environment.
The good thingsGreat people who make it bearable to work on a daily basis.
The challengesAny fresh or innovative ideas you have that differ from management are shot down and you're on the outer. So unless you're a "Yes" person, don't bother.

Great bunch of permanent staff - passionate, committed and agile
The good thingsThe agility of this Department- think of this it goes from about 250 FTE to 25,000 every two years. It has to source, induct, train and deploy them across the state. It then has an election process that must be defensible, transparent and subject to the highest public scrutiny, before packing everything away and getting ready for the next election
The challengesIdentifying and hiring staff - from 2 employees in my District to 350 in eight weeks- all part-time

Interesting to the point where I would do it again.
The good thingsAn opportunity to meet a diverse group of people. An opportunity to be involved in our democratic system.
The challengesThe administrative tasks assigned were quite straight forward and easy to complete. However, the team was set up in a factory. Post election, the weather was hot and the factory had no air conditioning. The work/tasks needed to be completed within set time frames. I found keeping hydrated was the biggest challenge (and expense).

A satisfying and rewarding working experience
The good thingsA great casual position to take up if you can, the people you work with will generally be pretty friendly and interesting, plenty of opportunities to talk and get to know each other as you work
The challengesLearning on the fly how to best organise and handle the work load is a challenge, but definitely a good experience and something you get better at within hours, which is what you will need to do
