Please avoid by all means possible. Toxic workplace.
The good thingsDrone licence and ConMon trainings and certification
The challengesI had work experiences in other places before SA Water. SA Water was by far the worst I have ever worked. As a ConMon officer, if you are looking for career progression, better think twice. You will be pulled down by any means and you will become frustrated and will have no choice than to leave. There will be no support from HR whatsoever. Until there is a change of management, please avoid or else you will be very sad all your days until you leave. This is an honest review. Do a thorough research!

A silo mentality in an organisation that promotes an innovative and inclusive culture. Disappointing
The good thingsFairly flexible in working (WFH, Hybrid), but that is dependent on the team you are in.
The challengesPoor communication for anyone working outside the office. Contractors that aren't embedded rarely feel part of the team and can be treated differently. Poor communication with contract extensions - this is often a last-second process. Almost no warning with contract cessation/not extending, so there is very little time to find another contract afterwards. The contracts are often short or no longer than 6months at a time. There is often poor visibility and a lack of communication on the work required - i.e., things are not explained clearly, and there is almost no time to get up to speed on things before being required to produce. This is a very poor way to do things and has been noted by staff that have been there for years, not just people on contract. The list is really endless.

Do yourself a favour and look elsewhere.
The good thingsThe team I was in were fantastic given they were poorly treated and over worked.
The challengesYou can't actually get your job done. The workplace is a bureaucratic nightmare. It promotes those who know how to suck up to management but can't get the job done. HR is not supportive to employees at all and is only interested in keeping people quiet. It has no strategic direction to resolve the decade of issues it has with aging and failing infrastructure.

After spending a long time with the company, I would say it's a place to avoid at the moment
The good thingsnothing at the moment.
The challengesThere is a noticeable lack of attention to the end customer. The company's project delivery model heavily relies on contractors, there is conflict of interest through the company, who appear to dominate decision for assets. As a result, there is little to no value for money being delivered through these projects. Top management seems to be politically driven, often prioritising ministerial agendas over the interests of genuine SA Water customers. There is a concerning lack of respect for internal experience and longstanding staff are not listened to and speaking up often results in punitive action. There is a fear culture with no collaboration. Unfortunately, senior leadership has become toxic, undermining morale and genuine progress.

Being advised after hours that my contract had ended forthwith with no reason given, nothing being said to me by my manager, & with me still having my access pass I think sums up the toxic environment of SA Water.
The good thingsBuilding is nice - pity about the toxic working environment.
The challengesLack of training and follow up support for a new starter. No introduction to people I was supposed to be working with. No assistance when requests were ignored. Toxic responses and negative pushbacks from alleged "go to" people. Being treated as if I was invisible. Overall toxic environment.

    Not a great career move
The good thingsThere are some great people that are really trying to make positive change
The challengesToxic culture with senior and exec managers that avoid accountability. Poor performers are often not managed with those promoting capability uplift ostracised. Frontline teams left feeling unsupported with a centralised model that is top heavy and ineffective. Middle managers are stressed.

It’s incredibly disappointing that in a company as large as SA Water, I experienced what felt like discriminatory behavior. Companies should foster diversity and inclusion, but unfortunately, that was not my experienc. I hope SA Water takes a closer look at how they treat employees from different backgrounds and ensures that such issues are addressed moving forward. This is a respectful yet honest way to express your feelings and experiences, while highlighting the need for change within.
The good thingsSalary, good location, nice building
The challengesI was really looking forward to my role at SA Water, but unfortunately, my experience was far from positive. From the start, I felt like I wasn’t welcome because I’m not white or Australian. It seemed like there was an unspoken bias against me, especially from the trainee. Their attitude made me feel like they wanted me out of the company. Despite my eagerness to contribute and learn, I felt overlooked and excluded. The lack of support and subtle instances of unfair treatment left me feeling disheartened.

    Wouldn’t suggest working here.
The good thingsWork mates, different working locations
The challengesExpectations from management is ridiculous from pushing 16 hour days on the field staff. No work life balance even though they promote it. No wonder why they have a massive turnover of staff

Good work life, but poor staff/management disconnect.
The good thingsGreat people to work with, travel to regions see great work workshops do.
The challengesLack of career advancement, and some staff are 2 faced. Management only promote mates and don't ever challenge anything as you get reported to HR. Also let go some good staff. HR are Management lapdogs, and are suppose to be neutral but are anything but. Poor culture.

Total waste of time. Shouldn't have left my last role.
The good thingsGreat, modern office building in the centre of Adelaide. Very easy to get to work and the hybrid working is pretty good overall. Lots of really genuine people at lower levels of the organisation.
The challengesBureaucratic, autocratic leadership, political, toxic. Say they're an employer of choice and promote positive culture but it's not true. Perks are non-existent. Don't bother speaking up or challenging status quo. It won't go well. Common sense is lacking. Difficult conversations are avoided and HR does what they're told by leaders. Real shame given SA Water serves our community.

    Not good
The good thingsModern building with good views
The challengesFrustrating being at the brunt of upset customers due to other teams not being held accountable for their roles.. Too many chiefs, not enough indians.. Sterile, boring work culture.. The high amounts of daily absenteeism and staff turnover say it all really.

I miss working for this wonderful company and would come back in a heart beat if I was given the chance!
The good thingsGreat people, culture and all-round environment. You are given a high level of responsibility and you're always learning something new.
The challengesSome of the capital jobs are given to workshops with unrealistic completion timeframes due to breakdowns etc. This can be somewhat stressful, however the challenges are always overcome with a supportive workshop.
