It could be an incredible place. But its sadly ruined by terrible management that have driven away scored of talented people and show no signs of changing their ways
The good thingsYou work with a passionate team of people who truly care about the work. You also have opportunities to have a really powerful public impact
The challengesManagement is a joke. They have zero idea of the realities of customer facing work. They ignore advice on potential issues from experienced staff and then when problems inevitably arise. They either shift blame to other staff, or find elaborate ways to make you the problem.

Disappointing: I loved the work and the site but it was not sustainable.
The good thingsThe people I worked with directly on the floor were incredibly passionate people who were proud of the beautiful new Boola Bardip site. We supported one another through a lot of hectic times and I was grateful for them.
The challengesManagement do not seem to realise that in order to deliver a world class experience to visitors, the staff need basic/appropriate resourcing. This was communicated many times by various teams. As a result a lot of people get stressed to the point of exhaustion and have to leave, myself included. Staff turnover is very high.

    Never again
The good thingsThere isn't much good here except maybe that you get free entry into the special exhibitions and a discount at the museum shop. I enjoyed talking to the general public.
The challengesManagement is the biggest challenge. No one knows what they are doing and push the blame downwards. The other staff are always trying to prove they are better than you with "fun facts" about the museum and exhibitions. The place has bad vibes all round.

    Don't work here
The good thingsI was hired specifically to work at the New Museum so there was a good training program and I got to know everyone really well. The New Museum is amazing with different galleries although the content is mostly designed for school children. I got to run some tours after a few months of standing in the galleries but the cool stuff mainly goes to people with connections or who identity as being part of a minority. The retail shop has some cool items although it's kind of expensive especially when you're there everyday.
The challengesThe opening of the New Museum was quite hectic and management didn't know how to handle it which was strange given it had been planned for months if not years. I had to work long hours (12+ hours, 7 days a week) in the beginning and everyone kept getting sick from stress which made it worse. I didn't get paid at all some weeks and it was really hard to follow up with payroll as they don't work in the building. A lot of things really just don't work here but no one bothers to make them better maybe because it's a government job so they just accept mismanagement. This was my dream job for so long but actually living it everyday was just too hard. It's sad to see how many people think it's a good job because they will end up just like me.

Management, HR and payroll are beyond incompetent
The good thingsCentral location near the train station. Meet a cross-section of people from the community. Free uniform for most staff.
The challengesThere were problems with staff recruitment, induction/training sessions, health and safety protocols, management, and organisational and department level communications. Pays were always incorrect. Hours were ridiculous at times with shifts constantly being changed last minute. Internal conflict was rife between departments and between staff and volunteers. Most staff seem unhappy probably because they are too educated/experienced for what are pretty basic jobs. Claim to be for diversity but not much evidence of it in practice.

    Exhibitions keep you interested.
The good thingsWork colleagues were great people to work with. The location of the museum is in a good spot, prime location to be among some prime events.
The challengesI think the most challenging part is the hours fluctuate so much between early starts and late starts that you have to be willing to be flexible.
