The good thingswork with really genuine and fun nightfillers.
The challengesManagement is not about the workers but always about the bottom line.

Profits over people all day every day
The good thingsHonestly finding it hard to think of anything I really enjoyed here. Free snacks in the break room I guess?
The challengesBrutally understaffed literally almost every day in every department. Pay is abysmal for the work you do, management are so stressed from ridiculous and unrealistic expectations that they have zero work/life balance, was contracted for 25 hours but did upwards of 40 most weeks, there's zero staff retention, big culture in the higher ups of "the customer is always right" even if the customer is abusing you for things you can't control.

Me who takes a break while working (but is told that I can't eat my food while working)
The good thingsHad excellent and organized Store & Nightfill Managers at the start. Being able to work by myself is a strong-point and also being able to listen to music while working was great before the 'better' managers left.
The challengesNight-fill team does not allocate their breaks; therefore the people who work hard by themselves-- still get a mouthful of garbage because of others not finishing their loads. Severely disorganized and usually don't have enough staff or perhaps they talk too much when being paired up

Was great to start then all went downhill
The good thingsthe friends i made working there and the people i met.
The challengesBetter management, support given when needed, better pay, improved communication. there's no work life balance here either. Management make you feel bad for being sick and needing to go home.

The good thingsBeing paid, the job itself wasn’t enjoyable
The challengesReplace management, retrain management and staff on OH&S. Micromanaged. Give credit where it’s due, not constantly put people down.

The challengesThe challenge could be how to deal with difficult customers but with train and help with supervision or team members it’ll make things easier

I had a good time working at Woolworths, it was an easy job for what I was doing and I enjoyed it.
The good thingsGood vibes, people were nice, work is easy once you know what you're doing. Definitely a stable job.
The challengesDidn't get trained properly, can be confusing if you're new to a role as you don't get much information. Gets a bit repetitive.

A necessary evil, that has pros but more cons.
The good thingsMade some friends, ability to transfer between stores when moving or relocating. A good place to earn money while studying. 5% staff discount
The challengesThe company is constantly trying to cut cost and it creates a high stress and high pressure environment to work in. The burn out. Constantly completing workplace surveys but never seeing anything be done about it.

Over all it’s not a good place to work.
The good thingsThe front line staff
The challengesThe challenge is the assistant store managers, they do not have capacity of managing staff and also does not even follow their own values and policy. They suppress staff.

Great for a first job, but anywhere further is horrible. There is very minimal support and growth opportunities provided from woolworths. It can be very difficult to even want to learn a different department as employees often got thrown in the deep end and not cared about. Head managers don’t even know my name and i’ve been there for a significant amount of time. Staff accused of stealing due to the new systems implemented when scanning items, even when the system has faults. No real training other than online modules. As a casual that has 24/7 availability I get a maximum of two shifts a month, and get the odd message in the group chat to come in to work within an hour. Managers only really care when the big bosses are in and they want to look their best. The managers in general are just rude and obnoxious. Generally the store is understaffed and customers get furious with team members as if it’s our fault. Overall, woolworths is an okay place to work as a 15yo, it is horrid beyond.
The good thingsPay is okay and increases are good. Creating friends in the workplace is sometimes easy. Great as a first job.
The challengesManagers tend to have a superiority and show it - would be repeatedly told after working there for three years how to do my job. New ways of scanning and packing had been implemented and managers would get mad at our low scanning accuracy scores but wouldn’t retrain staff or even assist.

The challengesYou have to be super efficient

A great sense of achievement in improving Australia's supermarket supply chain
The good thingsThe scale of the national supply chain is awesome. Allowed me to improve safety and productivity in its supply chain. Introduce paperless picking, layer picking, roll cages, .. with dreamlike teamwork.
The challengesThe many layers of management would slow the decision making.

Good to get retail experience as you get to bounce between multiple departments. Just don't go in and think you'll get any recognition if you do a good job, you will only be used until you're dry.
The good thingsFree lunch. Christmas parties. Lots of laughs with co-workers as you get a lot of friends there.
The challengesLow hours. If you do good they will exploit that and run you dry. Lots and lots of nepotism and favouritism within the management sectors. They don't take you seriously. Abuse from customers.

    Online Assistant Manager
    Sep 2024
Perth WA 60003 to 4 years in the role, former employee
I was able to develop good skills to put on my resume to get out of there. We used to have so many staff members and have time to train new staff, give customers a good experience etc. Now we have no time to train new staff, which means they become slow, make mistakes and feel ignored creating a bad team. We also have to neglect customers as we have so much pressure to get our job done by a certain time. It’s not what it should be about. The online department in particular is just hell.
The good thingsSome great people, depending on the store you can work your way up ñ. Great as a casual job, due to extremely unreliable staff you’ll get tons of shifts and great money. Not so much for managers.
The challengesEver since covid they have become extremely greedy and want to have as few staff members on as possible at all times. It never used to be like this years ago. They increase the demand, and decrease the amount of people to get the job done and expect you to do it for rubbish pay. Also if you’re a manager you won’t get your breaks because they expect things to be done in an unreasonable timeframe.

The good thingsIn my year at Woolworths, I thrived in the Fresh Convenience department. Daily tasks varied, keeping me engaged and enhancing my customer service skills.
The challengesHowever, the physical demands and irregular hours posed challenges. Balancing perishable items taught me valuable inventory skills while interacting with customers enriched my communication abilities.
