COVID-19 is still having far-reaching impacts on employment, but there are positive signs that the job market is making progress. Job ads have slowly been returning on SEEK, even for industries that were hit hardest by the lockdown.

Job ad numbers drop as restrictions continue across the biggest states

The latest SEEK Employment Report shows that national job ad volumes have dropped by 5.3% from July to August. However, job ads remain 15.2% higher nationally than in August two years ago. COVID-19 restrictions continue to have a major impact on the labour market. States and territories under the strictest lockdowns each saw a decline in month-on-month job ad volumes, with New South Wales and Victoria experiencing the most significant drops of 10.7% and 6.3% respectively. The industries that have been impacted the hardest in August are Hospitality & Tourism, Trades & Services and Retail & Consumer Products.

 

Healthcare & Medical industry experiences growth

Workers in the Healthcare & Medical industry are still in high demand with NSW, VIC, WA, and TAS experiencing the most significant job ad growth of 6.6%, 4%, 15.9% and 16.4% in the last fortnight. This has contributed to a national job ad growth of 6.3% for the fortnight ending September 5. The roles within this industry which have seen an increase in job ad listings are nurse, registered nurse, therapist and physiotherapist.

        

 

Education & Training workers in high demand

The Education & Training industry has experienced continued fortnightly growth in job ad listings, up 16.8% nationally from last fortnight. This increase predominantly comes from VIC, WA and TAS which saw job ads rise by 10.3%, 45.8% and 40%. Roles such as teacher and educator experienced the most significant increase in job ad growth for the fortnight ending September 5.
