What's it like to be a Student Support Officer?
Student Support Officers work in schools and tertiary institutions as non-teaching staff members and are typically part of a wellbeing team. In some cases, they may be trained Social Workers or Youth Workers.
Tasks and duties
- Delivering prevention and early intervention programs for students at risk, such as anti-bullying, social skill development and health programs.
- Mentoring or providing support to students who need assistance.
- Attending phone calls and being the first point of contact for a wellbeing team.
- Engaging with students on a daily basis and handling enquiries.
- Maintaining student records and files and other administrative tasks.
- Delivering induction sessions including student safety presentations.
How to become a Student Support Officer
Depending on your specific role, you may need a tertiary qualification to become a Student Support Officer. Previous administration and customer service experience may be preferred by some employers. You will also need a valid and current Working with Children Check.
- 1.Complete a tertiary qualification in social work, social science, youth work or a related discipline. This could be a Diploma of Youth Work (CHC50413), Bachelor of Social Science or Bachelor of Social Work.
- 2.Gain experience. Consider starting off in an administrative or customer service job to develop key skills for the role.
- 3.Obtain a Working with Children Check.
