  • Gathering evidence about the financial state of an organisation to ensure that the money going in and out is recorded and processed correctly.
  • Preparing reports, which may include a balance sheet, income and cash flow statement for stakeholders and shareholders of an organisation.
  • Gauging levels of financial risk within an organisation and ensuring assets are protected.

Auditors may also report on an organisation’s compliance with various regulations, such as those to do with sustainability and greenhouse gas emissions or OH&S.

Auditors may work internally within organisations or may conduct independent external financial audits of commercial and public sector organisations.

How to become an Auditor


SEEK Learning
A bachelor degree in the field of accounting is generally required to become an Auditor. These are generally three-year courses, open to anyone over 17 years and who has completed year 12 with an appropriate Universities Admission Index.

  1. Complete a Bachelor degree in the field of accounting. This could be a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) or a Bachelor of Accounting. Alternatively, complete a postgraduate qualification, such as a Master of Professional Accounting. This is a two-year degree for students with previous tertiary qualifications.
  2. Apply to participate in a Certified Practising Accountants (CPA) program to gain recognition as a qualified auditor. Applicants are expected to have served for several years on audit engagement teams, and progressed through increasing levels of responsibility in supervisory and managerial roles.
  3. Qualified auditors must complete at least 120 hours of training and education in each three-year rolling period.
