What's it like to be a Building Manager?
Building Managers look after the day-to-day running of a building. They assist the Owners Corporation with managing and maintaining common property and may undertake or manage duties such as concierge, security, cleaning and groundskeeping. Building Managers ensure that buildings they manage are well maintained and safe for tenants, whether they be residential or commercial.
Tasks and duties
- Supervising contractors and tradespeople, ensuring work is carried out to a high standard.
- Ensuring all building and evacuation procedures are maintained and followed, particularly in an emergency.
- Liaising with owners, tenants and strata committee members.
- Creating and presenting monthly reports.
- Maintaining up-to-date documentation and compliance.
- Attending committee meetings.
- Controlling key and access systems.
- Managing and auditing security systems.
- Operating concierge and reception service.
How to become a Building Manager
You don’t need any formal qualifications to work as a Building Manager. However, a combination of education and experience are beneficial and may be sought by employers.
- 1.Complete a certificate or diploma in facilities management or business, such as the Diploma of Facilities Management (10938NAT) or Diploma of Business (BSB50120).
- 2.Gain experience working alongside a Building Manager to build an understanding of the regulations, acts and technical skills relevant to the role.
