What's it like to be a Claims Manager?
Claims Managers process insurance claims on behalf of insurance companies and their clients. They review information submitted with claims, manage and monitor claims as they progress, and provide advice about insurance policies. Claims Managers need analytical skills and some knowledge of finance and risk management. They work for insurance companies of all sizes.
Tasks and duties
- Providing information to clients about insurance products and services.
- Reviewing client circumstances to ensure the appropriate type and level of coverage is provided.
- Documenting information about clients, claims and policies.
- Interviewing clients to determine the accuracy of information submitted in claims.
- Explaining details, risks, benefits and costs of insurance to clients.
- Managing and monitoring insurance claims to ensure the correct outcomes for clients, insurers and other related parties.
- Establishing and maintaining relationships with clients.
- Identifying and managing exposure to risk.
- Requesting specific information about claims, such as accident logs, medical records or bills.
How to become a Claims Manager
You can work as a Claims Manager without a formal qualification, but some employers may prefer candidates with a tertiary qualification. Experience in the insurance industry is also preferred.
- 1.Complete a relevant qualification. This could be a Certificate IV in General Insurance (FNS41420). Alternatively, complete a bachelor degree in business or law, which may provide broader career options. This usually takes three to four years of full-time study.
- 2.Build experience in an entry level-role in insurance, such as Claims Officer .
