How to become a Data Engineer

It is possible to work as a Data Engineer without formal qualifications, but this is a highly technical role requiring a degree–level knowledge of data, computer science and analytics. A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related IT discipline is recommended.

  1. Complete a bachelor degree in computer science. This is typically a three–year course of full–time study.
  2. Consider completing postgraduate study such as the Master of Computer Science. This is typically a two–year course of full–time study.
  3. It may be beneficial to further your specialisation in Data Engineering through a Data Science bootcamp or the completion of industry–recognised Data Engineering certifications.
  4. Join the ACS while studying and attain full certification upon graduation. Certification requires Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
