What's it like to be a Fabricator?
Fabricators make components and parts for different products such as machines, engines, toys, electrical equipment and household appliances. They may create a whole set of components or work on individual pieces. Fabricators traditionally work with metal, however some Fabricators also work in product design and development. Individuals who are good with their hands, have a strong understanding of maths and an aptitude for reading technical drawings are well suited to becoming fabricators.Did you find this video helpful?
Tasks and duties
- Consulting and reading blueprints, schematics and drawings to create products to required specifications.
- Using hand tools, flame-cutting torches or machines to make, cut, shape, weld, bend, repair or join components.
- Examining components and parts for faults and mistakes in order to remedy problems before faulty products are produced.
How to become a Fabricator
Most Fabricators have a relevant trade background, such as boiler making, welding or light fabrication. Some fabricators will have qualifications in engineering. Regardless of qualifications, Fabricators need to have strong skills in maths and English.
- 1.Gain a relevant qualification such as a Certificate III in Engineering (Fabrication Trade) (MEM30305). This qualification is usually undertaken in conjunction with an apprenticeship that provides on and off-the-job training.
- 2.Gain any specialist licences or requirements (such as a White Card if you are working in the construction industry).
- 3.Fabricators can specialise in a number of ways, such as becoming a brass finisher, a metal fabricator-welder or a structural steel trades worker.
