What's it like to be a Forester?
Foresters are responsible for developing, managing and maintaining public or private forests for commercial, conservation or recreational use. The role may include protecting against fire and managing the restoration after bushfires, minimising land degradation or conserving flora and fauna.Tasks and duties
- Managing resources within a forest to maximise the benefits for commercial, recreation or conservation purposes by establishing plantations, implementing fire prevention systems and ensuring a sustainable supply of timber.
- Researching, planning and implementing procedures to manage the impact of animals, fire, drought, soil erosion, pests and diseases.
- Observing, measuring and recording different features of the forest – such as growth and health of trees, cultivation techniques, soil composition and wildlife habitats.
How to become a Forester
To work as a forester, you’ll usually need a bachelor degree in a related field. These courses generally require the successful completion of Year 12 along with some prerequisite subjects such as mathematics, chemistry, biology and environmental science.
- 1.Undertake a bachelor degree in forest science, environmental science or forest science and management.
- 2.While not compulsory to work as a forester, it can be worthwhile joining The Institute of Foresters of Australia (IFA), which offers student and associate memberships. Field or practical experience is also highly valued by employers.
- 3.There are many career pathways for foresters looking to extend their opportunities, such as specialising in commercial forestry, becoming an adviser or consultant or undertaking further study (including a Master of Forest Science and Management).
