What's it like to be a Horticulturist?
Horticulturists draw upon their knowledge of all types of plants to assess the condition of soil, identify pests and diseases and maintain a healthy environment for plants to thrive. Horticulturists may work in private or public spaces, such as nurseries, sporting fields, parks and gardens.
Tasks and duties
- Preparing pots for planting and grafting.
- Making sure plants are well watered.
- Applying pesticides where necessary.
- Recording soil mixtures, plantings, treatments and yields.
- Trimming bushes and hedges.
- Mowing grass.
- Eradicating weeds and pests.
- Making sure plants are healthy and thriving.
- Designing public and private gardens.
- Interacting with customers and assisting them with choosing the right kinds of plants.
How to become a Horticulturist
To become a Horticulturalist in Australia, a qualification in horticulture or parks and gardens is usually required.
- 1.Complete a Certificate III in Horticulture (AHC30716) or a Certificate III in Parks and Gardens (AHC31016). You may be able to complete these courses as part of an apprenticeship.
- 2.Consider gaining certification in various related disciplines which will help you when you’re on the job. This could include irrigation, chemical application or operating and maintaining chainsaws.
- 3.Gain experience by working with an experienced Horticulturist.
