What's it like to be a Hairdresser?
A Hairdresser cuts, colours, straightens, perms, treats and maintains their clients’ hair. They also perform other hairdressing services, such as blow drying and styling. Hairdressers can work in a salon alongside other hairdressers, or run their own hairdressing business.Did you find this video helpful?
Tasks and duties
- Shampooing, conditioning and providing hair treatments.
- Styling clients’ hair with scissors, razors and clippers.
- Keeping utensils and the premises clean and sanitary.
- Providing additional services such as colouring and blow drying.
How to become a Hairdresser
Hairdressers can begin their careers as apprentices in a salon. Apprenticeships generally take three to four years to complete. Alternatively, you can become a qualified hairdresser by completing a hairdressing course such as the Certificate III in Hairdressing (SHB30416) at a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
- 1.Find an Apprenticeship Network provider or Group Training Organisation in your area to help you find a host employer and start your apprenticeship. Alternatively, complete a Certificate III in Hairdressing (SHB30416) at a Registered Training Organisation.
- 2.Progress in the hairdressing field to become a colourist, stylist, senior stylist and or salon manager. You may choose to complete a Certificate IV in Hairdressing (SHB40216).
- 3.Hairdressing is a service industry, so keep a detailed client database to ensure you can always provide the highest level of customer service to complement your hairdressing skills.
