What's it like to be a Lecturer?
Lecturers are employed by universities and other tertiary education providers to deliver lectures and tutorials to students. A Lecturer is normally expert in one or more academic fields and specialises in the teaching of that field. Lecturers also participate in research projects and may contribute to academic publications. Lecturers typically have strong communication skills which they use to lead lectures and guide discussion amongst class members. Tasks and duties
- Planning content of lectures and tutorials.
- Preparing and marking essays, assignments and examinations.
- Preparing and delivering lectures and tutorials, seminars and laboratory sessions.
- Providing academic guidance to students.
- Conducting research and contributing to academic publications.
- Stimulating and leading discussion amongst students.
- Attending faculty meetings and conferences.
- Contributing to curriculum revisions and course and degree requirements.
How to become a Lecturer
Lecturers usually complete one or more degrees in their chosen field(s) of expertise. Previous industry and teaching experience are also highly regarded.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in your chosen field of study.
- 2.Further extend your knowledge by completing postgraduate study to the masters or doctorate level.
- 3.Consider completing a graduate certificate in higher education.
