What's it like to be a Mechanical Fitter?
A Mechanical Fitter fabricates, installs and repairs heavy machinery. Working to a set of precise specifications, they operate tools and machines to grind, mill and shape raw materials into the specified form, then assemble the final product.
Mechanical Fitters have good hand–eye coordination, and work in factories and workshops alongside other workers under the supervision of a manager. They spend much of their working day standing and require a good level of physical fitness. They predominately work in the manufacturing and industrial sectors.

How to become a Mechanical Fitter
- Complete an apprenticeship providing the Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade (MEM30205). Course duration may vary but usually takes three to four years. An apprenticeship is a binding commitment made by both the employer and the trainee for the duration of the agreement.
- You may need to attain additional certifications for the use of forklifts, working in confined spaces or working at heights. These are usually attained through the completion of short courses and should be gained from a registered training organisation (RTO).
