How to become a Medical Scientist
To become a Medical Scientist you usually have to study laboratory science or biomedical science at university.
- Complete a relevant bachelor degree such as a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Medical Science or Bachelor of Biomedical Science. To register with an industry body, you may have to complete a degree accredited by the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists (AIMS).
- Gain experience performing basic laboratory procedures. Experience working in areas such as haematology, biochemistry or genomics may be beneficial.
- Consider joining the AIMS and benefit from access to professional development and networking opportunities. It may also be beneficial to apply to become a Certified Medical Laboratory Practitioner.
