What's it like to be a Microbiologist?
Microbiologists are scientists who specialise in the field of microbiology. Microbiology is the study of organisms on a cellular level and is applied in many different aspects of modern society, from food production to public health and research and development.
Tasks and duties
- Examining microorganisms including fungi, bacteria, yeast and their enzymes.
- Using gained knowledge of microorganisms to develop and improve commercial products.
- Working to prevent the spread of harmful microbes in hospitals, food production and amongst the general population.
- Testing samples from patients and identifying the microbes that cause illness.
- Developing and improving fermentation processes.
- Providing consultation to public organisations on matters of health policy.
- Investigating the microbiology of living cells, tissue, organs, animals, plants and microorganisms.
How to become a Microbiologist
You need to complete a university degree in Science to work as a Microbiologist. Many Microbiologists complete postgraduate study. Some students wishing to attain the highest level of university degree may enter a Ph. D program, which takes a further three years of study.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in medical science majoring in Biology. This is typically a three–year course of full–time study. Prerequisite subjects include science, English and maths.
- 2.Complete postgraduate study such as the Master of Science or Master of Applied Science (Microbiology). These courses typically take two years of full–time study to complete.
- 3.Consider completing a Ph. D such as the Microbiology and Immunology – Ph. D. This is typically a three–year course of study.
- 4.It is also recommended to join the Australian Society of Microbiologists (ASM). You can become a Student member while studying, and a Professional member after graduating from a minimum three–year qualification and completing two years of postgraduate work.
