What's it like to be a Naval Architect?
Naval Architects are responsible for the design, construction and repair of ships, boats, submarines and other marine vessels. They may work on both civilian and military projects and choose to specialise in one specific type of naval engineering or develop broad experience.Tasks and duties
- Designing civil and military ships, floating structures, submarines and other seagoing vessels.
- Estimating project costs and overseeing construction and repairs of marine vessels.
- Working with shipbuilders, engineers, ship owners and shipping organisations.
- Using computer-aided design (CAD) software and other technology to aid in designs and calculations.
- Providing engineering solutions and technical and commercial guidance to clients.
- Contributing to naval procurement processes.
- Researching and developing new design and construction methods.
- Carrying out surveys of ships’ hulls, superstructures and equipment.
- Measuring ships for tonnage and freeboard.
- Conducting investigations into incidents and faults.
How to become a Naval Architect
A bachelor degree majoring in Naval Architecture is required in order to become a Naval Architect. It is recommended to join Engineers Australia and the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA).
- 1.Complete a Bachelor of Engineering majoring in Naval Architecture. This is usually a four-year course of full-time study, including one year of Honours.
- 2.Consider completing postgraduate study, such as the Master of Maritime Engineering (Naval Engineering).
- 3.When eligible, join Engineers Australia and the RINA; you may be eligible for student membership while studying, with full membership becoming available after graduating and gaining some industry experience.
