What's it like to be an NDIS Support Worker?
NDIS Support Workers help people with disabilities by providing care and support services as part of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). They help people to navigate daily life and access critical services and support. They work for NDIS providers and may be paid or unpaid employees or contractors, and they can also work as volunteers.
Tasks and duties
- Helping people with disabilities to set and achieve goals.
- Providing transport, attending appointments and advocating on behalf of NDIS participants.
- Arranging social activities and assisting with household tasks and activities like cleaning, meals and showering.
- Coordinating and implementing individual care plans in accordance with NDIS guidelines.
How to become an NDIS Support Worker
You can work as an NDIS Support Worker without formal qualifications, but background checks and up-to-date immunisations are required. A tertiary qualification in individual support may be beneficial. Some on-the-job training may be provided.
- 1.Consider completing a qualification, such as a Certificate III in Individual Support (CHC33015), Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) (CHC33015) or Certificate IV in Disability (CHC43115).
- 2.Ensure you have up-to-date immunisations. Some employers may also require you to have a current Australian driver’s licence and your own vehicle.
- 3.Apply online to get your NDIS Worker Check. This may require other checks such as a Working with Children Check, Police Check, and/or First Aid certificate. Your NDIS Worker Check must be verified by a current or prospective employer to be valid.
