What's it like to be a Network Engineer?
Network Engineers plan, develop and implement computer network and system services and troubleshoot problems related to them. They generally work as part of an IT team, where they test and document computer network behaviour, performance and security to ensure optimal performance.
Tasks and duties
- Install, configure, test and maintain new networks and related applications, servers and workstations Troubleshoot network problems.
- Ensure network firewalls and security are up to date.
- Prepare and maintain procedures and documentation related to computer networks.
- Provide network programming in support of business needs.
How to become a Network Engineer
To work as a Network Engineer in Australia, you typically need a relevant bachelor degree. Industry-recognised certifications can improve your skills and employability.
- 1.Complete a relevant degree, such as a Bachelor of Computer Science, Bachelor of Information Systems or Bachelor of Information Technology. If you have a previous tertiary qualification in another discipline, consider completing a postgraduate degree in information technology or networking.
- 2.Alternatively, a VET qualification such as a Diploma of Information Technology (ICT50220) can provide you with skills for entry-level roles in this field. Some institutions allow you to specialise in advanced networking.
- 3.Seek an internship while studying to gain workplace experience and apply your skills alongside experienced engineers.
- 4.Consider upskilling by completing industry certifications such as Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) or Comp TIA Network+.
