What's it like to be an Optical Dispenser?
An Optical Dispenser is a professional who interprets optical prescriptions and supplies clients with frames and lenses.
Tasks and duties
- Interpret optical prescriptions written by ophthalmologists and optometrists.
- Discuss eyewear needs with clients and ensure frames and lenses conform to the ophthalmologist or optometrist’s prescription or recommendation.
- Help shape lenses and fit them to frames and perform minor repairs as required.
How to become an Optical Dispenser
To work as an Optical Dispenser in Australia you usually have to complete a qualification in optical dispensing. Some courses include a supervised work placement or may require relevant previous employment as a condition of entry. It’s also possible to become an optical dispenser through a traineeship and employers usually require a minimum of Year 10 completion.
- Undertake a qualification in optical dispensing. This will usually be a Certificate IV in Optical Dispensing (HLT47815).
- There are multiple pathways for experienced Optical Dispensers, such as becoming an assistant manager, working as a consultant to a lens manufacturer, or becoming a sales representative.
