What's it like to be a Paediatric Nurse?
Paediatric Nurses specialise in caring for children of all ages including neonates, infants and adolescents. They provide physical and technical nursing care in conjunction with emotional and psychological support.Tasks and duties
- Preparing care plans, providing nursing care and supporting patients.
- Administering first aid, vaccinations and physical examinations.
- Helping to prepare patients for surgical operations.
- Providing post-operative care such as wound care and nutritional management.
- Supervising nursing support staff.
- Administering prescribed medicines and treatments.
- Maintaining patient medical records.
How to become a Paediatric Nurse
You will need to be a Registered Nurse in order to work as a Paediatric Nurse in Australia. This requires a degree in nursing which usually takes 3 years of full-time study and includes a mix of theory and clinical nursing experiences.
- 1.Complete an approved bachelor degree such as a Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Science (Nursing) or Bachelor of Nursing Science. Entry to these courses requires you to meet English language requirements set by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).
- 2.Alternatively, if you have already completed a degree in a different field, complete a two-year masters degree in nursing.
- 3.Apply to the NMBA to practise as a Registered Nurse (RN). Registration must be renewed annually.
- 4.After gaining industry experience, consider completing a Graduate Certificate in Paediatric Nursing to build specialist knowledge and skills.
- 5.With several years of paediatric nursing experience and a postgraduate qualification, you could become a Nurse Unit Manager or Nurse Practitioner, or consider transferring into medical administration.
