A Personal Care Assistant provides support by assisting with day-to-day tasks in their client’s home or in a care facility. These tasks include assisting with bathing, grooming, dressing, feeding as well as taking clients to appointments. They may also need to assist with some basic duties around the home such as cleaning or tidying.

  • Assisting with bathing, grooming and dressing.
  • Administering medication and monitoring medical conditions.
  • Tidying and cleaning, including sanitising activities.
  • Providing social support, such as taking clients to appointments or accompanying clients on outings to cafes or shops.
  • Maintaining reports and providing updates to other medical professionals.
  • Assisting with light physiotherapy exercises and mobility.

Some Personal Care Assistants may assist with taking medications or supporting a client to complete rehabilitation exercises. Personal Care Assistants usually work independently with clients and may monitor, record and report details on a client’s condition to other medical professionals such as Registered Nurses.

How to become a Personal Care Assistant


SEEK Learning
To become a Personal Care Assistant, employers will generally require you to complete a qualification in individual support or undertake a traineeship.

  1. Complete a Certificate III in Individual Support (CHC33015). Some qualifications may allow you to choose a specialisation in Ageing, Home and Community or Disability. These specialisations may be preferred if you want to specialised care and support.
  2. Complete a traineeship under the instruction of a Senior Personal Care Assistant or Registered Nurse.
  3. Consider gaining a first aid certificate to enable you to administer basic first aid in emergency situations.
