How to become a Personal Trainer


SEEK Learning
To become a Personal Trainer in Australia, you need a Certificate IV in Fitness (SIS40215). You may also work as a Personal Trainer if you have a Diploma of Fitness (SIS50215), Complete Personal Trainer qualification, or a degree in exercise science or human movement.

  1. Complete a Certificate IV in Fitness (SIS40215). You may be able to complete the course through a combination of in class and online study.
  2. Register for a professional membership with Fitness Australia or Physical Activity Australia – it’s not a requirement for working as a personal trainer, but registration provides you with professional indemnity, public liability and product liability insurance.
  3. Explore opportunities to further your career; you may want to undertake additional studies or focus on training sports teams, weight-loss clients or young people.
