What's it like to be a Policy Analyst?
A Policy Analyst is employed by a government or other large organisation to assist in the planning and development of its policies. They review current policies and collect and analyse data to assist with policy creation and modification where necessary.Tasks and duties
- Analysing and reviewing current policies to identify anomalies and redundancies.
- Researching social, economic, industrial and political trends.
- Developing a range of policy options and providing advice on preferred option.
- Preparing surveys, reports and data analysis for stakeholder updates.
- Assessing implications of proposed policies.
- Preparing and maintaining policy and procedure manuals.
- Advising politicians and managers on lobbying activities.
How to become a Policy Analyst
A bachelor degree in a relevant field is required to attain a Policy Analyst role. Many candidates also complete postgraduate study. This role can be secured at the graduate level without relevant experience, but workplace experience may help you get ahead.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree majoring in political science or international relations.
- 2.Consider completing postgraduate study in a specialist field.
- 3.Aim to secure an internship while studying, this will provide you with valuable workplace experience.
