What's it like to be a Procurement Manager?
Procurement Managers are responsible for coordinating and obtaining any goods, services or products that a business or organisation requires. Procurement Managers are organised and analytical leaders with excellent forecasting skills who ensure businesses get the volume of products or services they need at the right time and in the most cost-efficient way. Procurement Managers may work in a variety of settings such as manufacturing, transport, logistics, information technology, retail or hospitality and tourism.
Tasks and duties
- Analysing the market, stock levels, new technology, suppliers and internal business data to identify opportunities for improvement and cost savings.
- Preparing and negotiating contracts with suppliers to ensure adequate stock levels and to meet quality and budget requirements.
- Overseeing procurement administration, such as the recording of purchases, storage, distribution transactions and contract execution.

How to become a Procurement Manager
- Consider completing a qualification in procurement or a related field. Options include the Certificate IV in Procurement and Contracting (PSP40616) or a Diploma of Procurement and Contracting (PSP50616) through TAFE or a registered training organisation. Alternatively you may wish to undertake a Diploma of Logistics (TL150415) or a Bachelor of Business (Logistics and Supply Chain Management).
- Gain procurement experience in the public or private sector and aim to take on increasing responsibility in the entire procurement lifecycle (planning, sourcing and contract execution) before applying for a Procurement Manager role.
- Once you are a Procurement Manager, opportunities exist to become a procurement specialist and work within a particular industry or with certain products such as IT systems.
