What's it like to be a Product Marketing Manager?
Product Marketing Managers specialise in bringing new products to market. They analyse market trends, competitor data and user feedback to determine how a product can be effectively marketed to its target audience. Strong communication skills, an interest in research and an ability to perform data analysis are central to the role of a Product Marketing Manager. They work for companies in a range of industries including marketing and communications, retail and wholesale trade, IT and healthcare.
Tasks and duties
- Determining positioning, naming, branding and messaging of new and existing products.
- Gathering and processing customer feedback.
- Performing competitor analysis and data analysis to inform product requirements.
- Determining online and offline marketing channels and tactics to be used for product marketing campaigns.
- Collaborating with sales and after sales support teams.
- Conducting interviews, surveys and focus groups.
- Identifying opportunities for increased customer acquisition, engagement and retention.
- Planning, executing and tracking marketing campaigns.
How to become a Product Marketing Manager
While it’s possible to work as a Product Marketing Manager without formal qualifications, a bachelor degree in marketing or a related field is usually an advantage.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree, such as the Bachelor of Business (Marketing). This is a three-year course of full-time study, with prerequisites including completion of Australian Year 12 (or equivalent).
- 2.Seek out internship opportunities while studying in order to gain practical experience. Product Marketing Managers may start their careers in a junior role such as Marketing Coordinator, before progressing to a senior or managerial position.
- 3.Consider completing additional certifications from industry vendors to further develop your digital and product marketing skill set.
