What's it like to be a Risk Analyst?
As a Risk Analyst you will help identify and assess potential risks to the financial and operational wellbeing of a company or other organisation. Risk Analysts work with statistics and (at times) advanced mathematical formulas to give companies an accurate idea of their financial and/or operational outlook with as much detail as possible. After reviewing risk factors, assessing their likelihood and impact, a Risk Analyst will establish a risk rating and then make suggestions on what controls an organisation needs to put in place in order to mitigate or manage those risks.
Tasks and duties
- Reviewing financial and legal documents, industry developments and related resources.
- Predicting future trends that may affect a company or organisation.
- Establishing a risk rating for risk factors based on the likelihood they will occur and their impact.
- Determining how the company can mitigate risks and recommending plans of action regarding limitation and management of risk.
- Putting in place key controls to prevent an event from occurring.
- Understanding and applying a risk management framework.
- Studying government legislation and advising companies on compliance.
- Using quantitative analysis, statistical models and valuation tools and techniques.
- Presenting ideas via reports and presentations, and making recommendations for improvements based on findings.
How to become a Risk Analyst
To become a Risk Analyst, a combination of education and experience is usually required. Risk Analysts may hold a minimum of a bachelor degree and around five years of work experience.
- 1.It is possible to become a Risk Analyst by obtaining a junior or entry-level position and gaining experience in the industry.
- 2.Consider completing a bachelor degree in commerce, finance or a related field, such as computer science, mathematics, statistics, or any other field that demonstrates your ability to understand and work with numbers and financial information. You may be required to experience with programming languages or financial services.
- 3.Alternatively, complete a graduate degree in a technical or analytical discipline, such as a master’s degree in risk management or financial markets.
- 4.Consider gaining a Master of Business Administration (MBA). Programs offering the MBA generally require two years of study beyond the undergraduate level and include both business and computer-related courses.
- 5.Gain work experience in a relevant field.
