Systems Administrators configure and manage computer systems in a networked setting. They oversee the installation and ongoing management of networks of desktop computers, wireless networks, server systems and other critical networks in a business.

How to become a Systems Administrator

It is possible to work as a Systems Administrator without formal qualifications; however, employers may prefer candidates with qualifications in Information Technology. Certifications from industry vendors may also be equally regarded.

  1. Complete a qualification in Information Technology. This could be a Certificate IV in Digital Media Technologies (ICT20115), a Diploma of Information Technology (ICT50118) or a bachelor degree majoring in information technology.
  2. Consider completing additional certifications from industry–recognised vendors in specialisations like A+, Network+ and Server+.
  3. Join the Australian Computer Society (ACS) while studying.
  4. Upon graduation, attain your ACS certification and undergo ongoing CPD.
