What's it like to be a Chiropractor?
Chiropractors diagnose and treat musculoskeletal problems, often in the spine, and manipulate joints in order to prevent and alleviate joint pain without the use of drugs or surgery. Chiropractors also plan and administer treatment plans which include exercises and dietary and lifestyle recommendations. They use hands-on diagnosis methods as well as diagnostics tools including X-ray and MRI machines.
Tasks and duties
- Administering a variety of neurological, musculoskeletal and functional tests to identify and assess sources of pain.
- Planning and implementing management of patients' dysfunction, including training and exercise regimes.
- Designing, reviewing, monitoring, assessing and evaluating treatment programs.
- Keeping detailed records of treatment history of all patients.
- Referring patients to other specialists when necessary and liaising with other Health Professionals in relation to patients' problems, needs and progress.
Chiropractors work in private practices and public health care services, as consultants in sporting organisations or physical rehabilitation centres or for health insurance assessment.
How to become a Chiropractor
To practise as a Chiropractor in Australia, you will need to complete an approved sequence of study that has been accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education Australasia. This typically takes 5 years of study.
- Complete a bachelor degree in chiropractic science followed by an approved masters degree. Alternatively, complete an approved double degree.
- After completing your study, register with the Chiropractic Board of Australia via the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Renew registration every 12 months by demonstrating the mandatory continuing professional development (CPD), professional indemnity insurance and recency of practice.
