What's it like to be a Family Support Worker?

Family Support Workers are professionals who offer and deliver practical and emotional support, guidance and services to children and families in need.

Tasks and duties

  • Work with clients to assess their needs and to determine the type of emotional or practical support and help they require.
  • Support children and their families by providing or locating practical and/or emotional assistance.
  • Work with other professionals as necessary and maintain accurate and up-to-date records.
Family Support Workers may work for a variety of organisations or agencies including child protection, community health, early childhood intervention, foster care or adoption, and family service. It is common for Family Support Workers to meet and work with families in their own homes.
Empathy, being non-judgemental and having good listening skills are important, in addition to having an understanding about what additional services and supports may also be available for children and their families.

How to become a Family Support Worker

To become a Family Support Worker in Australia, qualifications in community services, social work, social welfare or health are usually required. Positions are available for those with certificate qualifications, but some employers prefer a diploma or bachelor-level qualification.
  1. Obtain a Working with Children Check, or equivalent. Some organisations may also ask for a National Police Certificate.
  2. Family Support Workers who wish to further their careers can undertake additional qualifications in social work or family therapy.
