Secondary School Teachers (also called Secondary Teachers) promote the academic progress and general wellbeing of young people (typically aged 12 – 18 years) in the high school system.

Tasks and duties

  • Developing lesson plans to teach particular content in specific subjects.
  • Teaching secondary school students content and subject matter that meets state curriculum requirements by using a variety of materials.
  • Assessing, recording and reporting on students’ development, learning and progress.
Secondary School Teachers usually elect subject area specialisations and teach one or two subjects.
Secondary School teachers may be required to work outside of school hours, to attend school camps, supervise extra curricular activities and conduct parent-teacher interviews.

How to become a Secondary School Teacher

SEEK Learning
To become a teacher in Australia, you’ll need a relevant tertiary degree. These are typically four-year courses, for people over 17 years of age or who have completed year 12 with an appropriate Universities Admission Index. The courses provide a blend of theory and practical teaching experience.
  1. Complete a bachelor degree in the field of education. This is typically a Bachelor of Education (Secondary). Alternatively, for students with previous tertiary qualifications who have a major and minor in at least two curriculum areas recognised by Australian schools, complete a two-year Master of Teaching (Secondary).
  2. Before being able to work as a secondary teacher, you need to lodge an application for teacher registration in your state.
  3. There are many opportunities for career progression for secondary school teachers, such as becoming a special education teacher, leading teacher, assistant principal or principal.
