Understaffed, disregard of staff wellbeing, unsafe conditions, and lack of managerial accountability
The good thingsDespite a major culture issue in the workplace one of the most enjoyable aspects of my time here was the friendships I had built within the team. We developed positive dynamic that made a real difference to the day‑to‑day work experience. The relationships I formed were meaningful, and the team became a key source of motivation and connection. When resigning, the team was genuinely the hardest part to leave.
The challengesThere was an ongoing lack of support from management, with staff frequently spoken down to, yelled at, and shown little empathy for personal circumstances. Despite repeated reductions in hours, expectations remained unchanged. Shifts that normally required five staff were reduced to three, and shifts requiring three were reduced to two, creating serious work health and safety risks. As a result, theft increased noticeably, leading to ongoing concerns for personal safety. I was physically assaulted by multiple customers during this time, and these incidents were not adequately acknowledged or addressed. Performance expectations were unrealistic, with tasks strictly timed and failure to meet benchmarks resulting in formal write‑ups. Positive reinforcement and appreciation were minimal. While a “Moments That Matter for Our People” initiative was introduced to support staff, it was not effectively followed through. I received positive feedback only a handful of times over four years.

A dice-roll. You either put in the effort and like it, or find yourself in a losing situation.
The good thingsYour experience will vary from store to store, it very much depends on the staff you work it. A highly motivated store with a good management team can make it all worth it (in my case, I had that. But I have heard horror stories..) The pay is good. If you're able to handle to pace of work it can be rewarding.
The challengesIts universally known upper management are clueless about what its like to actually work in a store under their "own" expectations. They would fold quicker than most store assistants. It actually is the #1 issue working at aldi. If you're not surrounded with willing staff and a good, supportive management team, its only a matter of time until you're replaced or ROC'd out of your position. Clique's in some stores are very real, and can cost you your job.

Misleading and Toxic Culture– Proceed with Caution
The good thingsWork from home arrangement
The challengesALDI was the most disappointing workplace I’ve experienced. The culture is toxic, with bu**ying and antagonising seemingly tolerated. Management often supports this behavior, creating a hostile environment. A major concern is the misleading recruitment process. Roles advertised as permanent are often short-term contracts disguised with a “3-month probation” clause, which has no legal standing in Australia. This clause is used to cycle through employees without offering real job security. In my case, I was told the role was permanent, but it became clear it was a 6-month contract. The same role is repeatedly advertised, raising concerns about transparency and potential misuse of hiring budgets. It appears some managers are trained to exploit this system, with little accountability. My advice: if you’re considering a role at ALDI, don’t immediately reject other offers or cancel interviews. Take a week to assess the environment before committing. Proceed with caution.

Great pay if you enjoy just being a number
The good thingsThe people you work with
The challengesNext to no support from higher up, only care about high performance as well as high results, no work life balance at all, Burnout happens more then they care to admit, very minimal praise 95% of the feedback is negative, you are literally just a number they can and will replace you in a heartbeat and the role takes a massive toll on you body

You're just a number, you wont valued and your mental health will suffer.
The good thingsSteady job, good pay
The challengesYou're purely a number at this company. Most of the management have no clue what they are doing and treat their staff disgustingly. Work is piled onto people, until they crack. Staff get absolutely no benefits or incentives. I would not recommend ALDI as an employer to anyone.

Don't ruin your mental health by working here. The money honestly isn't worth the treatment you get.
The good thingsSome of the people that you meet, salary is good but that is how they trap you
The challengesUpper management have no clue, these people who get paid huge amounts of money make decisions that they actually have no idea how it affects things down the line. You are just a number at ALDI now which is extremely hard as it was not like that when I started. They push the good people out as well

Best place I've worked in my 18-year career.
The good thingsfocus on development and training, you're provided with all the tools you need to succeed in your role. Good leadership culture, team culture is welcoming & supportive. After working with a number of different corporates across in my career to date, this by far is the best culture I have worked in.
The challengesSome processes can be over engineered, and sometimes projects can take time to execute because of the thorough processes.

Compensation & Benefits: Despite strong financial performance, salary increments remain under 2%, which can be demotivating. A fairer and more transparent review process could improve retention and morale. Workplace Politics: Career progression often depends on internal connections rather than merit, limiting opportunities for high-performing employees outside the inner circle. Diversity & Inclusion: Leadership roles lack diversity, with a strong preference for German-origin executives. More inclusive hiring and leadership development initiatives could strengthen company culture. Advice to Management: Prioritise merit-based promotions to ensure talent and hard work drive career growth. Invest in leadership programs to create diverse, well-rounded future leaders.
The good thingsNone. Not even employee discounts.

I wish I never dedicated so much of my time to this business, you are a number and you get treated as such. Unless you are a favourite from upper management of course. I left feeling defeated, undervalued and my confidence at an all time low. I wish I left sooner!
The good thingsThe pay and the people you meet.
The challengesOut of touch management that are above store level. Unrealistic expectations for salaried managers to go above and beyond and put ALDI first. ZERO work/life balance if you are a parent. Providing excellent results but never being praised for the results!

hard, stressful, gave me anxiety, wish I could just do checkout and deal with customers, as some of the boys prefer doing the floor work, let them do that and I can do the parts I excell at the most, not fair they work like that, creates stress and feeling like you are not good enough
The good thingsgood work life balance for store assistants, can request not to work certain days throughout the rotating roster. I love being at the checkout and serving customers and the team members were awesome. pays well, free physio when needed
The challengesyou cant just be good at checkout, you have to be good at doing all aspects of the store , not just what you excell at. able to be there 6am to stock shelves, 6am in nov and dec coming up to xmas, very strict time limits to do this, unload each pallet onto shelf in less than 30 mins, make sure they're perfect, decarding shelves is, fix all products that are out of place , move all boxes to front remove empty boxes, emptying decarding boxes to compacter, make all products on the shelf perfectly tidy and flush to front in 15mins per aisle. very hard to do, seems the others in the team were allowed to do it with a bit of extra time and yet I was reprimanded for not being able to do it in 15mins per aisle. poor training from the start, they stick you on an ipad to do online training for 5 days, no ergonomics while you sit at the ipad. expected to hold it all day to do training. when you are doing the floor work you are almost running, running yourself at full capacity with no time to breathe or take a moment to think, it is like you are at the gym or running a marathon and you are exerting yourself but you cant stop. save your mental health, the money was good but being treated that way is not good, yet it seemed the other staff were not running around and had more time to do the tasks that I had less time to do, then you get told you are letting the team down. sad I had to leave, miss serving the customers

    Awful!
The good thingsIf you are lucky to find a good "work bestie" and have the same shifts.
The challengesManagement!! The area managers and others from he offices thinks it is about life and death! They will come visit the store and just completely overwhelm you with only negative things and makes the absolute smallest things to major stuff. But if you would to give them some feedback or constructive criticism they act like you are the biggest moron they have seen. Them and store managers will over work you to the fullest!

If you value your mental health, get any other job.
The good thingsThe pay was better than most, but even that's not great anymore.
The challengesThe culture is very toxic, it won't matter if you work very little or do the work of 4 people, you'll be criticized for anything and everything. Ive been in management and a store assistant and the higher you go, the worse it gets, nothing you do is ever good enough.

The good thingsI did not enjoy my time here.
The challengesToxic culture, management who talk down to people. You can have any degree to be a manager even if it doesn't relate to the department you're leading. The leadership team do not care for anyone who doesn't have a university degree and see people without them as unimportant.

In simple Gen Z, Gen Alpha terms. It's mid at best, and that's by being generous.
The good thingsAbove average pay. Half of the usual working hours of other DC operator jobs, but similar pay.
The challengesIt was good when I first started, but went downhill real fast. The dog water working condition of the place made many workers move to different sections or just quit. If in NSW and you are looking to work for an ALDI DC. Don't work at Prestons. Go to Minchinbury. If anything, try and not to work in the Prestons Cold Handling PM shift.
