    Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurse
    Feb 2026
Melbourne VIC 3000Less than 1 year in the role, current employee
Would not recommend this facility, particularly its ICU
The good thingsLarge tertiary teaching hospital, great exposure to complex conditions
The challengesPoor support on shift, little to no emotional support for staff, managers who don't check in on you, impossible work loads and inflexible rostering/leave. Patient safety is at risk every day in this unit.

Condescending micromanagement with a touch of patronising to boot.
The good thingsConnection to community, team spirit, doing what's right.
The challengesThe accidental leaders are promoted through lifelong employment, so they know the organisation, have earned promotion, but lack the leadership skills - I feel for anyone who calls them out, you'll come off 2nd best.

Overworked, underpay and no recognition of extra effort to make you at least feel appreciated.
The good thingsThe new facilities accommodating staff and visitors
The challengesLack of training, no hand-over, understaffed, management will not address the issue sighting "this is what the budget allocation can provide" which is insufficient in hiring additional staff for pathology collection.

Poor Culture Driven by Toxic LeadershipMy experience at Alfred Health was deeply disappointing. Despite its strong external reputation, the internal culture tells a very different story. Senior leadership operates in an outdated, ego-driven environment where toxic behaviours, favouritism, and power plays are common. It often felt like internal deparment teams were pitted against each other in a "survival of the fittest" mentality, rather than working collaboratively for patient or staff outcomes. The operations teams, who keep the organisation running, are consistently overlooked and treated as second-class. Efforts to drive innovation or improvement are often dismissed if they don't align with the personal agenda of the director of the department. Probhity and governance processes are non existent in making decisions. This is not a psychologically safe workplace. It is an environment where values are talked about but rarely upheld.

If it wasn't for the beautiful staff that I worked with I wouldn't of stayed for as long as I did.
The good thingsThe people I worked with were amazing, such caring individuals. I worked there for 2 years.
The challengesManagement - GOOD LUCK with that! They say their listening and want to help you and invest in their people but they don't. They undervalue you and are happy to give work to temps instead of investing in their current contracted staff. They would rather pay an agency and fill our roles with international people who can only work in one place for a short amount of time....how is that ok??

The good thingsTruly, I cannot thing of a good thing to say. Duplicitous staff and non -existent support led to a dreadful experience.
The challengesNo guidance, support or induction into the hierarchy of the organisation which is paramount it seems. Do not step out of your lane!
