    “This is my dream job”
The good thingsWorking at Australia Zoo is iconic, regularly while working there patrons would remind me how cool my job was. An absolute dream job! People who visit Australia zoo wish they worked there. It’s a bit of a flex to say “I work at Australia Zoo”….Met some cool people, get to see animals daily, the wiggles are there sometimes.
The challengesManagement could not be pointing their noses further at the sky, while having their heads completely in the sand at the jumping pillow. The job descriptions are vague and may not reflect what you end up doing. Regular hostility at work from multiple angles. Inflexible work hours. PPE and training often not offered. Workplace conflicts often get ignored or swept under rug.

A well-intentioned career at an iconic workplace ultimately soured by poor leadership, lack of training, and unrealistic expectations.
The good thingsThe team members I worked directly with made the job bearable. The relationships I formed in the trenches will last the rest of my life.
The challengesDisappointing Experience in an Iconic Workplace Worked across several departments over multiple years. While the brand is iconic, internal support and leadership left a lot to be desired. In my last role, I was placed into a new position with no training or onboarding, yet expected to perform at full capacity immediately. Responsibilities were unclear, communication was inconsistent, and leadership was often reactive rather than supportive. Long-term staff were frequently left without guidance, and genuine feedback was rare unless something went wrong. Management often felt disconnected from operational realities and quick to assign blame over offering help. This could be a great place to work under stronger leadership that prioritises training, clear expectations, and support for staff development.

I’d only go back as a guest
The good thingsFree Entry Co workers were friendly Hours/days weren’t too bad
The challengesManagement is terrible They don’t care about you as an individual The training was bad, got trained by three different people and three different ways of doing things Didn’t get told the times we were meant to finish a certain task Some people get a second chance to do better while others don’t

Keep the dream as a dream
The good thingsMy co-workers and the animals were the reason I went to work every day. I have made life long friends!
The challengesMicro-management. The whole "you are replaceable" and "you should feel grateful to work here" attitude from HR and General Management. I watched people around me crumble one by one because of actions and attitude from HR. No support what so ever, even though they have "policies" in place to say they do. The least most toxic environment i have ever worked in and I've been working for over 20 years!

Zoo was great, hr not so much.
The good thingsThe zoo itself was really lovely, my team were so great.
The challengesHR. While working there they would pull me up on silly things (eg. forgetting to take out my nose piercing) and were terrible and responding to my emails. After I left I asked to come back for the holidays a year later, they offered me a job. Three days out from the holidays they then contacted me and informed me that my position was no longer available/needed. After requesting further information and clarification regarding the decision I was then told for the first time that there was always a possibility of not being hired due to “weather” and “booked holidays”. Then told me “to look on seek”, this is right as the summer holidays are about to start and everyone is done hiring.

management is terrible, you are treated as dirt on their shoes. breaks are pretty much non existent, only 20mins on a 9.5 hour shift there is no proper training, instead you are constantly told that your not doing your job properly but also get no instruction on how to complete the task.
The good things free entry for staff members
The challengeseverything else about working for the zoo is terrible, there is no communication and HR/higher management ignore all complaints made by employees.

Management is horrible and tells you that you’re replaceable.
The good thingsCoworkers are nice and the animals are amazing
The challengesManagement made life horrible, they wouldn’t take serious issues to the Irwin’s. Management don’t care about how experienced you are, they will take people with zero experience and let them work with animals over people who have been there for years working with animals until COVID hit.

I disliked working at Australia Zoo so much, I only lasted 2 months. I was overworked every weekend, and only got 15 minute breaks due to being understaffed and undermanaged. I would not recommend
The good thingsClose to home, meeting different people, friendly staff
The challengesHorrible management, awful working conditions, hot & sweaty, overworked, no breaks, not enough staff to amount of customers, not enough training

A place that is amazing to visit, but one of the worst employment experiences of my career.
The good thingsExcellent animal welfare standards, friendly staff, beautiful grounds.
The challengesHighly political, lack of resources to perform role correctly, constant micro-managing, no ownership of work, little feedback, extremely low salary, little chance of career development and lack of work culture.

Not what the Australia Zoo logo suggests
The good thingsWhat a beautiful zoo! The groundsmen do an amazing job keeping the environment clean, which makes it a little easier to come to work.
The challengesPlenty of false promises, lack of communication, disrespectful managers. What seems like an amazing job is really just filled with plenty of bosses with big egos. If you are pushing for a career here, you will find it difficult!
