Used to be great but now just another big bank with big problems
The good thingsUsed to be a great place to work where staff, customers and shareholders were equally important. All that's left unfortunately are some of the great people from that era that are still around.
The challengesBad management, cost cutting at the expensive of productivity, no regard for staff or customers anymore - only shareholders matter, toxic culture, extremely low morale among staff.

Could have been great, became terrible
The good thingsThe hours & the salary are excellent Most of the people at my branch and within my region were excellent
The challengesThe onboarding - from day 1 there was no 1 on 1 training. You basically learnt on the go. There was no specific job responsibilities. No managerial support

An organisation that needs a Netflix documentary ran on it.
The good thingsHow streamlined & fast the recruitment process is… clearly get plenty of practice here.
The challengesThe reviews in this thread already expose the pattern and tell the story. A middle / senior management team & culture nowhere near the values preached & presented in the induction.

    Save yourself and look elsewhere.
The good thingsYou can make some great friends and work with good people.
The challengesEverything. Current MD and Execs will be the worst in 15-20 years to run the place. Don't bother to look for progression as you won't get it, no training, no support, very little management care. Wanna be / try hard big 4 bank but will never be. Lost its most important thing going for it its people and community.

Would not recommend as a workplace within the banking industry
The good thingsGood team within branch
The challengesSystem is so outdated No concern for customer experience Management does not care for branch staff All about trying to be apart of the big 4 without the resources, systems and management

Avoid at all costs, no support at all!
The good thingsVery little , some staff members.
The challengesManagement needs to see the toxicity within, include better training & support & stop pandering to the minority. They are so hell bent on trying to join the big 4, they have lost sight of customer service, staff morale & duty of care. If you are happy to be held accountable for any & all mistakes, this may be the job for you, otherwise stay as far away as possible. They promise you everything & deliver nothing.

Was great 10 years ago, sadly has lost its community identity.
The good thingsStaff home loan discount rate, flexible work from home
The challengesLack of internal opportunities to advance. Exec team in their own bubble have a superiority complex, transactional nature of employees.

A Small Bank that has moved away from what matters first (Customer's & Staff). Using the Lenders Effectiveness Report to get rid of staff.
The good thingsReally liked the Bendigo Bank Customer Service Model originally when I started
The challengesBut from when I started to when I finished the Bendigo Bank had moved away from providing Customer Service by trying to be a Big Bank like the Big 4 by pushing customer's out the door & concentrating on Profit. The Bank had very old systems for staff to use & were developing better Lending Systems to speed up lending process which will eventually make it easier for Staff to write more Home Loans. But the Bank then decided to increase Targets which are unachievable due to systems still not upgraded properly. Also Bank then decided to get rid of staff by bringing in a "Lender Effectiveness Report" which was never explained properly but used a Scoring System which no once could ever explain properly to me & then said your "Lender Effectiveness Report" was not good enough.

Great on Paper, Challenging in Practice
The good thingsThe bank has a strong brand and a reputation for being community-focused.
The challenges- The focus of senior management appears to have created a two-track system, which is detrimental to morale. - The environment is not conducive to growth or innovation, as there is little support for new ideas. - A significant number of long-tenured employees contributing to a stagnant culture. - While the bank aspires to be innovative, there is a lack of investment in both back and front-office capabilities. - Delivery capability is weak, and the prospects for meaningful change seem low. - The culture is toxic, characterized by cliques and a sense of entitlement among certain groups. - The "community" branding lacks substance, as there is little genuine volunteering or engagement.

    Just another big bank.
The good thingsPartial work from home.
The challengesNot customer focused. Focus has shifted from community to profit turning. Management treat those with children like a burden unless they are 100% available as if they didn’t have children. Pick and choose who they are willing to support through hard times and who they won’t. Talk the talk but don’t walk the walk.

Toxic Workplace Culture driven by Middle ManagementDirect team was great. No support to frontline from non customer facing teams. Frontline working magic for customers under double standards. They are being measured to move fast and yet no one in the remainder of the business move fast at all. Upline middle management not supportive. Toxic workplace outside of direct team - avoid.

    Don’t work here. Just don’t.
The good thingsColleagues are good, local location is good.
The challengesNo support, a culture of blame, management act superior and everyone else is nothing. No flexibility, stating that people can’t work from home because they won’t actually work! No trust in staff, micromanaging and scapegoating staff to save themselves.

Glad I have left, local senior management focused on own career.
The good thingsGreat immediate team environment, including Line Managers within the Business Banking division and local branch/business development (Mobile Lender) team - awesome cohesive internal referral partnership teamwork
The challengesUnrealistic targets and naivety from national exec. of competitive 'local' market. Expectations that redundant community bank model is a lever of pull through for new to bank business. 'Working together' model broken with local division seeking to meet own agenda at all costs-shoot first, ask later

Last CEO set the stage for happy shareholders and miserable staff and reduced care about customers - There are much better places to work.
The good thingsSome great people doing the day to day work in IT, friendly and helpfull.
The challengesSome very Toxic incompetent managers in IT, lie to staff and try to bend policy to fit their actions. Continue to make "organisational" changes which are ill considered and obviously unworkable, Managers in position with little understanding of the disciplines they manage and no respect for staff.

What a s***hole to work at
The good thingsInitially, it was a good place to work. As time went on it became very toxic.
The challengesLack of training, lack of ethics, little fiefdoms in every area, disregard for staff wellbeing, demanding we take long service leave all at once, refusing to give time to do training, only providing free online training

Want to be like the Big 4.
The good thingsOnce was a great place to work with out pressure from senior management.
The challengesSystems antiquated. Process and policies hard to follow and tasks are repetitive. Expected to work with minimal staff. Unrealistic expectations to achieve 100% accuracy for specific tasks completed but systems do not support you to be able to do this. Staff no longer valued.

    Used.
The good thingsPay, customer relationships and customer satisfaction, feeling the sense of accomplishment when given the opportunity to excel.
The challengesDon’t go for a Personal Banker / Customer Relationship Officer role as a high percentage of branches in Melbourne are making Personal Bankers / Customer Relationship Officers work purely as tellers without the prospect of further training, development and support with staff having no reservations in yelling at other staff. A high turnover, with the only feedback you can give is not through management, but through a cheap irrelevant monthly “spark” survey.

The good thingsFlexible, inclusive (value woman/mothers and support their needs), positive management (no micromanagement) and a positive overall work culture.
The challengesSystems can be a little behind but lots of improvements currently happening.

if you're happy with mediocrity, and everything being exactly average, then this is the place for you.
The good thingsoffers good work/life balance, people a generally well intentioned
The challengesGood intentions are...well good, but as the saying goes; good intentions pave the way to hell. there is an overwhelming lack of accountability across the board, mediocrity is king, everything moves very slowly so it's a very frustrating environment. no resources or budgets to do anything that will shift the needle.

The good thingsPeer support in our region is excellent and so is the regional manager.
The challengesBeing pushed more towards a Big 4 bank model of sell, sell, sell. Archaic computer systems that don't talk to each other

    Be warned and stay away!
The good thingsWork/life balance Decent base pay
The challengesWarning to everyone that this place has gone thru another restructure and made things much worse. New processes don’t work at all, everyone on the front line knows this and every further change making it worse. Impossible to achieve anything in the role due to lack of support. Latest restructure has halved bankers and those left are leaving by the day, yet the narrative is how great things are? Trying to act like a big bank without even a sliver of their competence and efficiencies

Could have been a great role if not for the inefficient, fragmented IT and processing systems.
The good thingsReasonably flexible working arrangements.
The challengesTerribly inefficient, outdated and fragmented computer systems due to upper management deficiencies, mean staff need to work much longer hours than necessary.

From the moment I joined I felt I was a trusted adviser in my role rather than having to prove myself, this was very refreshing and I felt very supported in my role.
The good things- People are very welcoming, empowering and transparent. They put people first. - A variety of work, lots of support to develop professionally. - Flexible hybrid working, get to work from home a lot with no pressure to be in the office. - A bank with community values with exciting plans for the future. - Supportive of what works best for me and how I work best.
The challenges- Systems could be a bit better for HR.

Quite good to start with, slowly but surely going downhill in absolutely the wrong direction.
The good thingsCustomers and helping community organisations via grants. Some of the staff.
The challengesA detioration of customer service over the time I was there! In fact it is no longer about looking after customer's needs and requirements but about sell, sell, sell even if not best for customers. Regional office relations going steadily downhill. So many different computer systems and all linked to one old dinosaur that came out with the ark. People in management positions who should never have been there. They talk the talk and pretend to be nice to customers then talk about them as soon as they leave or hang up the phone.
