    Drill Controller IROC
    Jan 2026
Perth WA 60001 to 2 years in the role, former employee
    - I am glad I am not working there anymore. - If you want to work for BHP, work on site not IROC.
The good things- Somewhat a friendly work environment. - They have little reward programs but some departments use them more then others.
The challenges- Always pushed to do better when your performance is at maximum. - Whilst in early training as an NTI you're quickly expected to perform just like other operators whom have been working in the industry for years. - Constantly being micromanaged. - Everyone is always miserable, constantly complaining about their salary and bonuses. - Never receiving positive feedback when you actually do well in your department. They only like to point out things you do wrong. - They constantly emphasize how important it is to "follow the company values" when they don't follow the values themselves and instead, they create a toxic work environment that just turns employees against one another in a competitive way, to only focus on the flaws that each other is doing and then crying about it to their line leaders. - Constantly getting spoken to like dirt over the comms 2-way when you are always being friendly and trying to keep those on site safe. Just simply doing your job.

A deeply disappointing experience -- I would NOT recommend this company even to an enemy.
    The good thingsFlexible work environment.
The challengesIncompetent leaders in Procurement and Commercial function, toxic culture, and a tendency to reward underperformers. Restructures are poorly planned and executed. Although safety is emphasised publicly, employees often fear speaking up due to potential repercussions.

It was the best of times... and it was the blurst of times. Experience ruined due to company ethics compromised in favour of nepotism. The appointees can be as useles as they like as they are friends witht he superintendent. Those ads you see on TV? They're full of you know what!! If you get in... Take the cheque and coast along under the radar. There's no punishment for being mediocre.
The good thingsBHP pays great superannuation, their shares scheeme and the hours are pretty good. Probably the best you can find anywhere in Perth
The challengesThe purple circle in management. They are untouchable. They can be as incompetant and completely out of their depth and it wouldn't matter. The pressure is then applied to the shop floor to compensate for the shortcomings. A lot of attention on petty issues and none on site improvement.

Challenging to keep positive and your mental health in check.
The good thingsWorking along side highly skilled and experienced Tradespersons. (Trainer Assesors)
The challengesworking with inexperienced trainers who are hired to tick the KPI Box and The management who hire them and their inexperienced friends at the expense of professional employees who are overlooked and pushed out the door. This is detrimental to the students whom we are supposed to be training.

    Toxic, uninspiring company
The good thingsSome good benefits and there are opportunities to progress.
The challengesWorking at Nickel West has been the lowlight of my career. Fresh graduates with no real world experience are quickly promoted into managerial positions and lack the skills and experience to lead. Upper management in Perth are constantly coming up with ‘initiatives’ that are uninspiring and ineffective and don’t care that it doesn’t work on a site level. Safety is a joke. It’s production over everything else. Always cutting costs at the expense of safety. Everyone is overworked and burnt out. Most people have worked there for far too long and are opposed to change. BHP is falling behind the rest of the industry and is quickly losing their place as a preferred employer.

It's been fun but likely time for change.
The good thingsPay is OK but not world leading. My team is amazing to work with and the people on the floor are genuine. Camp and food is ok. 1/1 roster is great for work life balance
The challengesMiddle management is atrocious and appointed on their ability to talk the talk (or diversity). Not necessarily their actual ability or knowledge. The new BOS system is a joke and a constant source of time wasting and frustration. Upward mobility is next to non-existent and they don't promote or develop from within (from the floor). Upper management change titles all the time like it's a game and it's hard to know what anybody actually does up there. Overcomplexity and constant changing and 'streamlining' of systems causes confusion to the point people have to try to work around them or we need to hire more people to try and deal with them. Diversity hires into heavy labor intensive roles tend to go very badly and they struggle and need to be carried by other members of the crews. Turnover in our department is at an all-time high (nearly everybody here is new or looking for a job), but management just seem to shrug their shoulders. Strangely, there does not seem to be any tangible improvement, even when we are told things are getting better.

The good thingsYou do a good job and it will always get appreciated in some shape or form!!
The challengesWith deep knowledge and experience also comes high expectations and sometimes this proves to be a challenge and one needs to actually go out of one's comfort zone to rise to the expctations. But I enjoyed it!!
